Pierre Bonnard, French painter, printmaker and photographer, began painting while studying law in Paris, but soon abandoned the art of forensics to devote himself only to painting. Passed under the influence of the current of Art Nouveau, Bonnard became interested in Japanese prints, very fashionable in the Parisian artistic world at the end of the nineteenth century, to the point of carrying some traits in his paintings: Bonnard will be nicknamed the "Japanese Nabi". With his friend Edouard Vuillard, he also developed a new interest in the scenes of intimate domestic interiors, a genre that would become known as "Intimism" and which proposed the Parisian world in the years before the First World War. In 1910 Pierre Bonnard discovered the south of France and thus began to paint luminous landscapes. In the last twenty years of his artistic career he continued to paint, ranging in all subjects and in all techniques congenial to him, creating decorative paintings but also numerous sketches and drawings, lithographic works in color or in black and white, posters, illustrations for books and magazines that have influenced modern art. The aquatint presented here is part of a large 1920s production of this subject, the "woman with dog", proposed in many variations. It is presented in a frame.

A constant in his life was the profession of the Catholic faith, which always had a priority role for him. He received numerous commissions for the decoration of churches and this made him return to the great tradition of mural painting by performing solemn frescoes of monumental structure, inspired by a literary Catholicism. The religious fervor led Maurice Denis to found, in 1919, the Ateliers d'Art Sacré, dedicating a lot of time to prayer, so much so that he became the tertiary of San Domenico, without isolating him from the world, for which he participated in the social life of the time. In addition to his vast production as a painter, Denis was a great draftsman and illustrator. Until his death Maurice Denis continued to paint in a modern interpretation of the great ancient painting, supported by his strong artistic vein, continuously fueled by his travels, many of them in Italy, which led him to come into direct contact with the Pre-Raphaelites and the neoclassicals.

Born in Milan and trained at the Brera Academy, Giuseppe Ghiringhelli exhibited for the first time in 1900 at the Milan Triennale, and subsequently participated in numerous national exhibitions. These are two works to be proposed aligned because they depict a boy and a girl lying on the same lawn in a mirrored position, as if facing each other, probably intent on a love game: they wear gypsy clothes and have musical instruments with them - she a tambourine and him a violin - which refer to two characters of Slavic ethnicity, from the gypsy world. He also received several public commissions for the decoration of numerous monuments and buildings of the city of Pavia, in which he frescoed historical and mythological scenes. The design here proposed tells the most well-known episode of the life of St Martin, the young soldier of the Roman imperial army who cut in two his cloak to make a gift to a poor beggar, and who later converted to Christianity.
