Description : I Vespri siciliani
Oil on canvas. It is a copy of the famous painting by Francesco Hayez (1791-1882), which tells the famous episode of the Sicilian uprising against the French domination of the Angevins, which took place in 1282, triggered by an offense that a French soldier did to a young Sicilian woman. Hayez realized three different versions of the same episode, for different clients. This is a copy of the first version, made in 1821-22 by Hayez on commission of the Marquise Visconti d'Aragona, who wanted the artist to give the main characters the physiognomy of her friends: in fact the figure of the outraged young woman was identified as the Countess Martini Giovio, and the man who supports her as Count Pompeo Belgiojoso. The copy proposed here looks more like a study of Hayez's work, due to the lack of finishes. It is presented framed.
