Additional Information
Artist: Attilio Pratella (1856-1949)
Born in Lugo di Romagna in 1856, Attilio Pratella initially enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, but having obtained a scholarship, he moved to Naples where he studied alongside Puccinelli, Palizzi and Morelli. Here he exercised his artistic activity until his death, flanked by Casciaro and Dalbono. Pratella resumed the themes of the so-called School of Posillipo, but with a stroke of greater modernity and freshness, overcoming the purely picturesque aspect compared to other contemporary painters and creating works of great poetic suggestion. Above all, he created marinas and, in medium-small size formats, the corners of a Naples on the verge of extinction, the alleys, the lowlands, the alleys, the popular markets. Like Casciaro and numerous other artists active in the Campanian city, Pratella preferred oil painting, although sometimes also adopting the pastel technique. Starting from 1881, he exhibited continuously in the Neapolitan exhibitions of the Promotrice Salvator Rosa, until the second decade of the twentieth century. From this date, in fact, annoyed by the popularity created around the great names of twentieth-century Neapolitan painting, he no longer wanted to take part in group exhibitions, preferring to exhibit his paintings only in his personal exhibitions.n
