Under the base brand incusso. Gr. 1130. The French term vermeil indicates a variety of gilded silver. The characteristics required for this material are a base of sterling silver, coated with a gold plating of at least 10 carats and a thickness of at least 1 and a half microns. However, it is common to use 14-karat gold, with higher thicknesses. The chemical affinity between silver and gold gives the plating good resistance qualities. Currently the plating is obtained by electrolysis. Originally, when this process was introduced in France, in the mid-eighteenth century, fire gilding was carried out. Plating avoids the problems related to the oxidation of silver, Vermeil being more expensive than silver is a material used to make valuable objects (jewelry, medals, fountain pens, cutlery, toilet sets, watches, refreshments, snuffboxes, travel bags, cc.).
