Description

Center unit finished on all four sides. Made of oak, it is completely veneered in mahogany feather and decorated with carved mahogany moldings and pilasters. Consisting of two doors superimposed by a drawer under the top with an internal lectern. On the sliding surface there is a riser with a retractable door concealing internal drawers veneered in maple; wooden railing on the raised surface.

This articulated piece of furniture was part of a library furniture attributable to the cabinetmaker Henry Thomas Peters. Of English origin, he moved his business to Genoa in 1817; he was with Gabriele Capello the most used cabinetmaker by the architect Pelagio Palagi for the works at the Savoyard court. For this reason, his production is characterized by ornamental motifs derived from the "Palagian" taste, while the preference for the use of mahogany is characteristic of his English training. In this piece of furniture the virtue of the cabinetmaker emerges in the construction quality and in the skilful use of the mahogany feather. Finally it is the carving, the distinctive trait of his production; the pilasters have motifs that are found in his furnishings and which are evidenced by the desk that he made for King Carlo Alberto on the recommendation of Pelagio Palagi, very similar to the one presented here. Style: Albertino (1830-1848)

The Louis Philippe style spreading between c. 1830 and c. 1850 corresponds almost exactly to those of Charles Albert, King of Sardinia (1831-1849).
nThe latter's name is often used to speak of the Albertine style to place furniture, especially of Piedmontese origin, built during this period.

Under the name of oak or oak various types of woods derived from plants of the genus quercus are grouped. They are always resistant, hard and compact woods. Oak is lighter than oak, both are used for more rustic furniture or for the interiors of French and English antique furniture. In other processes it was gradually replaced by the advent of exotic woods considered more valuable since the 18th century.

It has three drawers surmouted by a small drawer in the undertop band and a folding door that hides a compartment with drawers. Walnut. It shows the typical topo inlays, geometrical frames on the sides, tripartite front, a greek on the band and floral rosewindow inside the reserves except for the one on the door that shows an inlaid bird and the central one that has an elegant marquetterie drawing. Small sideboard with two doors and two drawers surmounted by a showcase with side shelves supported by thin turned uprights. The panels of the doors like those of the sides of the riser contain floral ceramics, in the center of the door with glass there is a bas-relief ceramic panel with the allegory of painting, this is an indecipherable signature, on the back the "Goldchelder Wien" brand , referable to the well-known Viennese ceramics factory and engraved with the numbers "0764 / 16 / 30&". The wavy feet, the cymatium, like the rest of the piece of furniture, have small "whiplash"carvings and carved florals, defined by gilding and lacquering. Brass-coated frames, hardware, worked in floral style with partly gilded copper sheet flowers and fruits.
