Description : Jesus' Soldiers
Oil and enamel on canvas. Title, date and signature on the back. Daniele Galliano, originally from Pinerolo, self-taught, begins to exhibit in Turin, where he lives and works, at the beginning of the 90s, quickly gaining a prominent place within that new Italian pictorial scene that took its first steps in the late 1980s. His painting technique belongs to the so-called “photographic realism”, which involves the transition from photography to painting, changing the status of the image that the artist offers with a new and personal look. The titles affixed to the works give an absolutely non-neutral reading of the scenes themselves, expressing crearly the artist's obligatory thoughts. His reinterpreted images of places and people reach the Italian and foreign public and allow him to participate in important solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the United States. The piece presented here offers an interpretation of a traditional liturgical moment: the group photo of a First Communion is transformed by Galliano into an absolute declaration of power in the centre, with the black and white figures of the children - the yin and the yang - and the purple of the universe in the background. The painting is accompanied by authentication on photo and a catalogue of Galliano's solo exhibition "All good things", that took place at the Raffaelli Art Studio in Trento in 2008, where the work was exhibited.
