Description

Group of six 925 silver glasses with vermil silver interior. Silver and Silversmiths' brands wedged under the base. Gr. 1060 The French term vermeil indicates a variety of golden silver. The characteristics required for this material are a base of sterling silver, coated with a gold plating at least 10 carats and at least 1 and a half microns thick. However, it is common to use 14-carat gold with higher thickness. The chemical affinity between silver and gold gives the plating good resistance qualities. Currently the plating is obtained by electrolysis. Originally, when this work was introduced in France, in the mid-eighteenth century, a fire gilding was carried out. Plating avoids problems related to the oxidation of silver, Vermeil being more expensive than silver is a material used to make valuable objects (jewellery, medals, fountain pens, cutlery, toilets, watches, refreshers, tobacconists, travel nécessaires, cc.). Its cost is intermediate between that of the two elements that constitute it.
