Description
Oil on canvas. Little is known of the Venetian artist Michele Giovanni Marieschi who made his debut as a set designer, creating a series of about twenty canvases before 1733, depicting courtyards characterized by majestic arches and wide stairways, considered sketches for future theatrical productions. Influenced by Marco Ricci and Luca Carlevaris, Marieschi then began to devote himself to the creation of whims and views, creating unmistakable landscapes, Venetian and non-Venetian, characterized by some persistently recurring elements, almost with signature value: the huts, the trees, a bridge , the juxtaposition of ruins, classical, Egyptian and contemporary buildings, very often wet by water, to give a pastiche character. In the last years of his life, Michele Marieschi's activity was mainly focused on the engravings that became a tool to make his skills as a landscape painter known to the various collectors of the time. In his works, the skill in the diversified rendering of materials (stone, marble and wood) and the wise use of lights and shadows stand out, all wrapped in silence and often animated by rare figures. In the Marieschian style, a strong perspective always dominates (legacy of the scenographic experience) and the tendency to propose an angled view, in order to deform the structures and offer a majestic reading of the subjects. Also in this whim this angled and perspective setting is highlighted: from right to left, a series of buildings in ruins, of different architectural typologies, with sloping dimensions, are proposed, which then flow into a lake landscape and distant mountains in the background. In the scene are inserted several figurines intent on different activities. The restored and relined work is presented in a gilded frame from the first half of the 20th century. It comes from an important historical Milanese collection.
