Oil painting on canvas. The painting is a copy of the famous painting by Parmigianino, dated 1540 and kept at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. It represents the young and beautiful Lucrezia while piercing herself with a dagger. The legend of Roman Lucretia is linked to the expulsion from the city of the last king of Rome, Tarquinio the superb: forced by violence by the king's son, Sesto Tarquinio, to give in to his wishes, Lucretia took her own life with a dagger after having told what happened to her father and husband; they decided to avenge it, promoting and leading a popular uprising that led to the expulsion of the Tarquini and the election of the first two Roman consuls, Lucrezia's husband Lucio Tarquinio Collatino and his friend Lucio Giunio Bruto. The work has been restored and relined.
