Grisaille on paper. Signed at lower left. On the back there is a mid-nineteenth-century scroll written in French by the art critic Monsieur C. Faucon, who recalls how Bazin, for his skills, was nicknamed the "Charlet of the miniature", referring to the then well-known engraver Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845), who specialised in military subjects and in particular in depicting Napoleonic deeds. This splendid work by the famous French miniaturist, very delicate in its monochrome grey tones, depicts the leader Napoleon standing alone on a snowy hill, while his army awaits him below. According to the critic Faucon, the subject seems to have been inspired by Charlet's lithograph C'est lui? (or "Is it him?"), which similarly depicts a solitary figure, but on horseback, at the top of a hill. The work is presented in a contemporary gilded frame. Grisaille on paper. Signed at lower left.
