Oil on board. Signed at the bottom right. The landscape, with mountains looming over the small lake, is characterised by the play of colours, used in only two ranges: the sky, mountains and lake are distinguished only by the subtle shades of blue, while the aquatic plants and the thin strip of flat land create breaks of green. Born in Lovere, in the province of Bergamo, Giorgio Oprandi completed his art studies in his hometown, at the Accademia Carrara, moving to Rome after his first successes. He took part in the First World War in the Alpine corps, producing a series of Alpine views characterised by the tiny silhouettes of soldiers intent on war. From 1923 onwards he began to travel the African continent, where he spent long periods in various countries and produced several of his works. The 1920s and 1930s were characterised by his Orientalist production and his intense participation in national and international colonial exhibitions. In 1940 he made a long trip to Albania, which he described in a series of fine ethnographic portraits. On his return to his home town, Oprandi sought solitude and disappeared from official exhibition circuits, exhibiting only in his house-studio in Bergamo and then in Lovere: his landscape views of Lake Iseo and the surrounding area date from this last period. The proposed painting, which could be part of this last production, is presented in a revival frame.
