Madonna and Child with Adoring Women

Born in Milan and trained at the Brera Academy, Giuseppe Ghiringhelli exhibited for the first time in 1900 at the Milan Triennale, and subsequently participated in numerous national exhibitions. He devoted himself mainly to landscape and portraits, but in his production there are also several representations of the sacred maternity, depicted with intense luministic effects. The main themes were views of Pavia and glimpses od Ticino represented with fast and vibrand brushings and with 19th century angles. He also received several public commissions for the decoration of numerous monuments and buildings of the city of Pavia, in which he frescoed historical and mythological scenes. The design here proposed tells the most well-known episode of the life of St Martin, the young soldier of the Roman imperial army who cut in two his cloak to make a gift to a poor beggar, and who later converted to Christianity. It is a work carried out with the "knife" technique by the well-known master of Anagni (FR) Carlo Turri: combining the Renaissance style with the taste and creativity of high contemporary craftsmanship, he has created his works entirely by hand, using techniques of the fifteenth century and paying particular attention to chromatic research and three-dimensionality.
