Description

Bronze sculpture depicting a little girl. Work entitled "Carolina" by Marcello Tommasi, Italian sculptor and painter of the twentieth century. The work is also found in Paris in "Square Gabriel Pierne". On the foot, the author's signature engraved and the creation date of the sculpture "1968". The sculpture represents a life-size naked girl. The torso hangs to the right and the hands are placed on the hips: the body thus forms a soft curve that makes the position of the character more feminine. Her hair is pulled back into a ponytail on the crown of her head. His face has a determined expression and his eyes are turned to the right, as if something is attracting his attention. Carolina could represent a cheeky, rebellious and proud girl, heedless of her nakedness.

Marcello Tommasi (Pietrasanta, January 29, 1928 - Lido di Camaiore, September 27, 2008) was an Italian sculptor and painter. Active mainly in Florence, Paris and Pietrasanta, he was considered "the symbolic heir of fifteenth-century Neoplatonism". Born into a family of artists (he was the son of the sculptor Leone Tommasi and brother of the well-known painter Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni), he graduated in Literature at the University of Florence, earning a doctorate in History of Art in 1966, with a thesis on Pietro Notch. Between 1948 and 1958 he frequented Pietro Annigoni's studio, drawing, painting and gradually turning his commitment to sculpture. Marcello Tommasi lived mainly between Florence and Versilia, often moving to his beloved Paris. Master of figurative art, he worked a lot both in the sacred and in the secular art, often taking inspiration from Greek myths. Its huge production includes hundreds of works including drawings, sketches, sculptures, paintings and frescoes. His works can be found in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints at the Uffizi, in the National Museum of Warsaw, in the modern art galleries of Barcelona, Malaga, Piacenza and in that of the Vatican; at the Azorin Museum in Monóvar and at the Birthplace Museum of Michelangelo Buonarroti in Caprese Michelangelo; at the National Library of Paris, at the University of Pisa and at the Institute of Art History of the University of Florence. Numerous sculptures and bronze and marble groups by Tommasi are located in monumental churches, public buildings and important squares, in Italy and abroad. The statue was placed in the square Gabriel-Pierné, a green space at the intersection with rue de la Seine and rue Mazarine, behind the chapel of the college of the Four Nations.
