Description

6-light neoclassical chandelier, Genoa second quarter of the 19th century. Structure made of wrought iron within which are inserted one into the other wooden elements carved with leafy and gilded motifs, making up the stem, and the wrought iron arms which support the lights, necklaces and glass pendants. Present elements in chiseled sheet with blue glass set in the center.

Product Condition:
Lamp which, due to age and wear, may require restoration work, and probably has an electrification system that is not adequate to the standards in force.

Foucault's Spinning Top

The Foucault spinning top is one of the earliest gyroscopes, elaborated on a prototype by Bohnenberge, and following the experiments of the more famous "Foucalt Pendulum". A wheel is placed on a ring so that the axis of the rotating disk can move independently of the ring; the function is to show the rotation of a rotating body by emulating the movements of the Earth in space. This version, slightly more elaborate than the original, was made by Elliot Bros. in the third quarter of the 19th century, in polished lacquered brass with steel fittings. The latter, which is older than the rest of the lot and dates back to the 17th century, is stamped with a chalice on the outer part, while each of the inner weights has a triangle within which a six-pointed star is inscribed.

Marked 'A34' on the rim. Dimensions: Cm 9 h x 11.5 w x 7.5 d. The pint bears the mark E Cowles Hounslow W. Marked "A/2" "B/8" "1/16" "K/14" just below the rim. Dimensions: Cm 11.5 h x 14 w x 9 d. The quarter gallon has the following inscription below the rim "E R 524 LCC". Dimensions: Cm 15 h x 17.5 w x 10.5 d. Finally, all three jugs bear the English crown punching.

It is the simplest example of a galvanometer, that is a device that measures the intensity of the current by means of the magnetic field created by it. The body of the luminaire, supported by three leveling screws, consists of a thick brass ring, whose external diameter is 200 mm, on which a circular scale is engraved. Inside the ring can rotate a disk, also made of brass and of the same thickness, which supports, in the points where it is crossed, a vertical circular frame, of the same metal. The rotation of the disc inside the ring is facilitated by two small handles vertically fixed to it; its position is read on the external scale, in correspondence with two diametrically opposite incisions, marked between two pairs of clamps, placed on the sides of the vertical frame. On the periphery of the frame, two systems of turns are wound in a groove; each of the two spools thus obtained is connected to two clamps. Since the two circuits have very different resistances, by joining them in series or in parallel the compass can be used to measure currents of very different intensity. From the disc, in the area immediately inside the coils, protrudes a ring that holds an annular aluminum limbus inside, which carries a scale with divisions that mark the degrees; the ring is closed by a lid with a glass plate through which the inside of the compass can be observed.
