Description : Madonna con il Bambino in trono tra i Santi Domenico e Francesco d'Assisi, con Dio Padre benedicente tra due angeli

Oil on canvas. Tuscan school of the late 1500s - early 1600s. The canvas is part of a large sacred production, which exalted the glory of Mary and the saints close to the client. In the center, Mary sits on a throne with her little son in her arms, while above, from the open skies, the Eternal Father blesses her, with the terrestrial globe in her hands, a symbol of her power over the world; He is flanked by two angels. On either side of the throne there are two Saints: on the left, San Domenico di Guzman, dressed in the habit of a Dominican and holding a lily and a book in his hands; on the right, in his characteristic habit, Saint Francis of Assisi, holding the cross in the shape of a Tau and a book, and on whose hands the signs of the stigmata can be seen. The whole scene is characterized by the static nature of the figures still typical of the Renaissance period, by bright colors and by composed and delicate features of the faces. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in an antique frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Tiburzio Passerotti (1553-1612)

The eldest son of the famous painter Bartolomeo and Imperia Toselli, Tiburzio Passerotti was born in Bologna in 1553. Initiated by his father into an artistic career, in 1571, at the age of eighteen, he was aggregated to the Company of painters and bombasari, in which his father enjoyed great esteem. The beginnings of Tiburzio can be recognized in the Loiani altarpiece with the Martyrdom of S. Caterina for the Augustinian church of S. Giacomo Maggiore, one of the most prestigious construction sites of the sixteenth century in Bologna. Signed and dated 1577, the altarpiece was carried out by the twenty-four-year-old Tiburzio with the help of his father. In the demanding work, the young Tiburzio modified his father's lesson in a mannerist sense, accentuating the artificial poses and the iridescent colors, acquiring a pictorial style to which he would always remain substantially faithful. During the eighties, following a disagreement with his father, Tiburzio moved to Venice, where he participated in the decoration of the Doge's Palace. Returning to Bologna and rehabilitated by his father, Tiburzio took his place on the Council of the Company of Painters, where he held the position of massaro. In 1603 Tiburzio left the Company of painters to join that of drapers, one of the most powerful guilds in Bologna. Tiburzio Passerotti died in Bologna in 1612.
