Oil on the table. Signed and dated lower right. Colorful flowers in a white vase, and some fruit scattered across the table, are rendered with large, overlapping brushstrokes, in bright colors on a light background to create a bright and vibrant effect. Teonesto Deabate was a Turin artist who devoted himself not only to painting, but also to other forms of applied art: ceramics, interior decoration, illustration. His pictorial production belongs above all to the post-war period and is made up of landscapes, still lifes but also figures, made in watercolor oil: in it the search for light-color relationships is fundamental, to create sensations of finesse and sensitivity through subtle tonal combinations and elegant arabesques. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Teonesto Deabate (1898-1981)

Born in Turin on June 17, 1898, Teonesto Deabate studied at technical schools and then enrolled in the Albertina Academy. In 1917 he volunteered for the war (some drawings remain). After the conflict in 1918 he returned to Turin and began to paint and, at the same time, to deal with applied art, exhibiting for the first time, in 1922 at the LXXXI Promoter of fine arts in Turin. From 1921 to 1924 he began to collaborate with the ceramic factories in Mondovì, exhibiting in this field at the 1st Exhibition of decorative arts in Monza in 1923. In the same year he began his collaboration with the painter-decorator Gigi Chessa, which later continued in the Theater of Turin and, at the same time, he worked as an illustrator for several magazines. In the 1928 Turin International Exposition (dedicated to the anniversary of Emanuele Filiberto and the tenth anniversary of Victory) he created wall decorations for the theater of the party and fashion pavilion, for the mutuality and assistance pavilion and provided the complete project for the pavilion of potters and glassmakers. Always in the field of applied art he also collaborated, from 1927, with the Lenci company. From 1929, the year of its foundation, he began teaching at the Higher School of Architecture in Turin (later faculty of the Polytechnic of Turin) which will continue until 1970. At the same time, an intense pictorial activity continued with Piedmontese landscapes and the Ligurian Riviera and with exhibitions in various private and public galleries. In the decade 1930-40 he designed many innovative furnishings among the most significant in that period, in Torno and other cities in Piedmont. From the end of the Second World War he concentrated his attention on painting, painting landscapes, still lifes and figures in the wake of the figurative tradition, and exhibiting in numerous group exhibitions. From 1960 to 1980 he often went on business trips to Lake Orta, the Venetian lagoon and the Susa valley and he left oil and watercolor cycles of these places. He died in Turin on May 16, 1981.
