Description : Rappresentazione allegorica in occasione della laurea di Giovanni Angelo Altemps...
Engraving on silk, applied to canvas. This is the coeval transposition on silk in large size of the print created as the title page of the graduation thesis of Giovanni Angelo Altemps (1642 -1680), son of Pietro and nephew of Giovanni Angelo Altemps (1583 -1620); the graduate, a domestic prelate, was governor of Fano and Spoleto and later master of ceremonies for Pope Alexander VII. In 17th century Baroque Rome, the title pages of the degree theses were drawn and engraved by the most important artists of the time, and gave the opportunity to philologically illustrate - through symbols, allegories, metaphors - the content of the thesis works. The ornate copies of these frontispieces, the richest and most beautiful versions, were delivered to the Pontiff. In this scene, in front of a Baroque fountain and surrounded by angels and nymphs, a man receives a laurel wreath on his head; above him, an inscription with the name of Pope Alexander VII and the graduate. The work is presented in a frame from the early 1900s, in style.
