Watercolor on paper. Signed in pencil on the lower right. The Russian-Scottish artist William Walcot, architect, graphic designer and printmaker, painted numerous glimpses of the European or South African cities where he lived, in a style that made him the leading exponent of Russian Art Nouveau. In the small painting proposed here we can see some figures probably of street vendors, gathered under an umbrella, near an urban road crossed by a gig. In a stylish frame.

Born in Odessa to a Russo-Scottish family, William Walcot grew up in Western Europe and South Africa until the age of 17, returning to St. Petersburg where he studied at the Academy of Art under Leon Benois. He was an architect, graphic designer and engraver, becoming one of the main exponents of Art Nouveau in Moscow; in particular his Keystone Lady's Head has become one of the symbols of the modern Russian style. His pictorial production, made in oil or watercolor, includes glimpses and views of the cities he lived, often animated by figures.
