Oil on hardboard. signed lower right. On the back on the frame, the Modenese address of the artist and the date of realization of the painting. Detaching himself from the purely satirical cartoon production, but maintaining his characteristic illustration style, the Modenese artist Mario Molinari wanted here to depict a sort of allegory of the four seasons, depicted by four female figures in clothes and contexts suited to the season they represent; in the center, dividing the scene into two paintings, there is the wind rose, leaning against a grape tendril, which marks the transition between summer and autumn. Moreover, some funny elements are also inserted here, such as the sweeper waiting for the last autumn leaf to fall, or caricatures, in the silhouettes that emphasize the feminine prowess and in their poses. Even the chromatic choice of pastel colors, on a monochromatic background that links all the figures, helps to give lightness to the drawing. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Mario Molinari (1903-1966)

Mario Molinari was born on January 9, 1903 in Modena. From elementary school he was appreciated for the ease with which he portrayed his notebooks, his classmates and his teacher. After the elementary school he worked for the art bookbinder and xylographer Gozzi until he was sixteen; then, towards the age of twenty, he collaborated with some student magazines in the city, performing caricature cartoons that allowed him to make himself known and appreciated by a vast audience who immediately appreciated his satirical vein. In 1930 he made sketches for the Modenese Week, for Il Sandrone and for Mò chè ghegna, drawing images of city, social, sporting and administrative life. He also produced a specialized repertoire of animals and flowers, the only subjects in which the artist did not express his satirical streak. In the 1950s, his satirical pencil was at the service of newspapers such as Il rest del Carlino, La Gazzetta dell'Emilia, Il Corriere dello sport, Momento Sera, Il Guerrin Sportivo, L'Asso Sportivo, Il Tempo and il Tifone. Mario Molinari died in Modena on January 26 in 1966.
