Description : La Morte di Raffaello

Oil painting on canvas. Above right the signature "Boffa Nicola fecit Napoli 1885, from Ascoli Satriano"; at the bottom right the number 591. It corresponds to the one on display at the Promotrice di Belle Arti, XLV Exposition of Turin in 1886, as shown in the catalog of the same. The great scene is the work of the painter Nicola Boffa, originally from Puglia but then lived in Naples. It tells of the dramatic death of the young genius of art Raffaello Sanzio, which occurred at the age of 37 after a few days of a persistent fever in vain cured. Various hypotheses have been made about the causes of his death (syphilis, malaria, pneumonia, poisoning ...), none of which is certain: it is certain that it was a shocking fact in the Renaissance artistic world, in which the young man from Urbino had achieved great fame: it aroused condolences and regret in the papal court itself, for which Raffello was working. In the great scene, the young artist now lies serene on his deathbed, while around him men and women of all backgrounds and social categories express their pain and dismay: the tall prelate next to the bed in a composed manner, while all around him young people and women are in broken tears, with the culmination of the manifestation of pain on the left, where a young man lies unconscious on the ground, comforted by a friar. The scene, although highly dramatic, is enlivened by bright colors and by a detailed accuracy of the details of the figures; in it we find the nineteenth-century taste for the historical subject, to be told through images that underline its pathos. The painting is presented in an important coeval frame, in carved, shaped and gilded wood. The canvas has diffuse small drops of color.

Additional Information

Artist: Boffa Nicola (1859-1925)

Born in Ascoli Satriano (Foggia) in 1859, Nicola Boffa worked mainly as a drawing teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he lived for long periods, carrying out a discontinuous artistic activity. He took part in the Berlin International Exhibition of 1883, the Spanish International and the "Salvator Rosa" Promoter of Naples in 1895, where he again exhibited the dying Raphael. Among his works, we recall the 1887 portrait of Francesco De Sanctis, literary critic and patriot and then minister of the new Kingdom of Italy. Boffa died in Naples in 1925.
