Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. The extremely sensual portrait of the woman in skimpy clothes and in a languid pose belongs to the peculiar portrait production of the French painter and engraver Charles Joshua Chaplin. Famous in the Parisian artistic environment, he received commissions from the Empress Eugenia. His great technical skills are well appreciated in his engravings, which are distinguished by thin lines and extreme graphic precision, while in the paintings he impresses his coloristic ability of "tone on tone" where the colors fade from white to silver-gray. to pink in portraits of ladies that match the great English portrait painters of the 18th century. The work is presented in a style frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825-1891)
Born on June 8, 1825 in Andelysin, France, to an English father, Charles Joshua Chaplin studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1845, having completed his studies as an engraver and lithographer, he made his debut in a living room portraying a lady. His production, inspired by Rococo painting and characterized by the delicacy of tones, included mainly female portraits, but also landscapes and animals. Chaplin exhibited his works at the Salons in Paris without interruption from 1845 to 1868 with the exception of that of 1859 when, the painting "Aurora", was not accepted because it was deemed too sensual. Public opinion was divided on this exclusion but the ban on the display of his works was abolished by Napoleon III himself. Appreciated by the Empress Eugenie, Charles Joshua Chaplin became in 1860 the official painter of the Second Empire, very famous and fashionable among the general public, receiving the task of decorating the Hall of the hemicycle of the Elysee Palace, the Opera House and the Tuileries. The painter also held a famous painting studio, reserved only for women. During his career he received many honors and awards: he was knighted in 1878, Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1881. He died in Paris in 1891.
