Description : L'arcangelo Michele in cerca di Lucifero

Oil on the table. Signed and dated 1945 upper right. It is an ironic representation of Saint Michael, the archangel who is traditionally considered the one who fights the devil: here he is depicted with his sword in his hand as he goes around the world in search of the devil, who is hiding behind a passerby. Luigi Filocamo is a Milanese artist who mainly dedicated himself to sacred art, and to mural painting, of which there are works in many Milanese and Lombard churches. His style, still linked to the twentieth century modules, found ever greater appreciation by ecclesiastical clients. The work is presented in a period frame. Consecrated to sacred art ivories

Additional Information

Artist: Luigi Filocamo (1906-1988)

Born in Alexandria of Egypt in 1906, but soon moved to Milan, Luigi Filocamo began to propose his first exhibitions in Milan after the war, around the 1930s, and subsequently participated repeatedly in the great national exhibitions, the Venice Biennale and at the Rome Quadrennial. After the Second World War, Filocamo was instead absent from the main national exhibitions, because his work did not follow the developments of contemporary artistic research, but his style, still linked to the forms of the twentieth century, nevertheless found ever greater appreciation by ecclesiastical clients. Filocamo devoted himself both to easel painting dedicated to lively enchanted figures, and to mural painting dedicated above all to sacred art. His cycles of frescoes are found in San Babila, in S.Maria del Suffragio and in the Arengario of Milan, in the Abbey of Montecassino, in the basilica of Santa Rita da Cascia. He also executed some stained glass windows on the theme of the Resurrection for the private chapel of Paul VI in the Vatican; other of his stained glass windows are in S.Ambrogio and in the Duomo of Milan. The artist died in Milan in 1988.
