Description : Scorcio di tempio in rovina

Pastels on paper. Signed lower left in pencil. Evocative work by the Danish artist Arild Rosenkrantz, symbolist in style, who was a painter but also a master glassmaker, sculptor, illustrator. His production was inspired by the anthroposophical theories of Rudolf Steiner and by Goethe's philosophy. WJ Goethe in his "Theory of Colors" hopes that painters treasure the moral action of colors, revealed by him, to make their works more alive and pulsating. Even Rudolf Steiner glimpsed in Goethe's lesson a mine of very useful knowledge to bring about a renewal of painting. In particular, we owe Steiner the very important discovery of those intimate sensations that could be defined as "movements of the soul" and which, in the contemplation of colors, are experienced in the depths of the subconscious. Rosenkrantz translates this search for intimate sensations into his works, transforming a landscape like the one proposed here into an experience of the soul, through the use of almost impalpable, rarefied colors and lights, which introduce a dreamlike dimension. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Arild Rosenkrantz (1870-1964)

Arild Rosenkrantz was a Danish noble painter, sculptor, stained glass artist and illustrator. After the death of his father, a Danish diplomat, he traveled with his mother to Italy, Scotland and England. He studied art in Rome, but also in Paris and from 1894-1895 he went to the United States at the Tiffany glassworks. From 1898 he settled in London, where he established himself as an artist, creating stained glass windows, frescoes and tomb decorations: here he joined the Anthroposophic Society. In 1912 he met the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner personally, and two years later he and his wife moved to Switzerland to participate with other artists in the decoration of the Goetheanum Center of Anthroposophy. In 1925 Rosenkrantz returned to London, where he worked for the Anthroposophical Theatres. Returning to Denmark in 1939, he remained there throughout the war period and subsequently, on the death of his wife in 1944, he settled there permanently, working for another twenty years, until his death in 1964. Arild Rosenkrantz's art was influenced by Steiner's anthroposophy and Goethe's theories.
