Oil painting on canvas. The Italian-Albanian artist Kabregu (stage name that draws from the language of origin) chose as subjects of his works the colors and popular characters of his homeland, the mountainous Calabria and the Italian-Albanian colony of Lungro where he lived. The subject of the laundress was re-proposed by him several times. Kadregu looks to impressionism in the chromatic choices and plays of light, albeit resorting to a strongly material use of pictorial materials. The painting has a small tear in the lower right corner. It is presented in a stylish frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Enzo Domestico Kabregu (1906-1971)

Enzo Domestico born in 1906 in Acquaformosa (Cosenza), takes the stage name Kabregu, pseudonym from the toponym Bregu - or Brego in Lungro, the town in the Esaro valley, among the major centers of the Albanian community in Italy (arbà « reshe or Italian-Albanian). At the behest of his father he enrolled in the agricultural technical institute of Cosenza and subsequently enrolled in the courses for agronomic engineer in Naples. In the Neapolitan city he comes into contact with the artistic circles where he cultivates his natural predisposition for painting and the figurative arts with great passion. He enters the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Naples where he meets many masters of Neapolitan painting. After completing his studies in Naples, Kabregu moved to Rome and subsequently stayed in some cities of Northern Europe where, thanks to the frequenting of many artistic circles, his cultural formation was enriched more and more, highlighting his predilection for the impressionist current. In 1934, at the age of 28, he left Italy to move permanently to Uruguay, settling in the city of Montevideo, immediately entering the cultural circles of the Uruguayan capital. In the Italian School of Montevideo he taught art for 25 years. In 1954 he and his wife founded a ceramic workshop. In 1960 he returned to Europe and resumed contact with the most important artistic circles. Together with the sculptor Zorilla and the painter Garino, in 1964, he reorganized the «San Francesco d'Assisi» Institute of Fine Arts in Montevideo. In 1968 he was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and received the Gold Medal from the Calabrian colony of Uruguay. A tireless student of the great masters, Kabregu is distinguished by the pastel patches of impressionism and the harmoniously angular figures of cubism. The works created in Italy, as well as in the Latin American country, are nourished by the reference to the arbà«reshe (Italian-Albanian) roots: the colors of the Lungrese hills, the mountain slopes, the humble peasant houses, the hard work of the salt workers , the gjitonie (neighbourhoods) of Lungre, as well as the placid waters of the Ionian Sea, represent an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration.
