Description

Acrylic on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. The surreal style work features a child's face in the foreground on the right, behind which a rather disturbing bare tree stands, from which two fantastic creatures stand out, sprites in the form of flying drops; the landscape around, or the semblance of a landscape, evokes snow and solitude. The expression and pose, with both hands in front of her mouth as if to prevent herself from screaming, reveal a restless little girl, perhaps even frightened, but in any case also intrigued by what is happening behind her. Even the colors used, pastel hues without bright contrasts, contribute to not loading the scene with drama and fear, but rather to dilute the tension in the fable-like illusion. The features of the little girl's face are also found in other works by the artist, as well as the pose of the hands. The pictorial style belongs to Dino Buzzati who, in his pictorial narratives, parallel to his literary creations, tells a universe of magical realism, a level of reality in which dreams, magic and lively corporeity exist. While undergoing the avant-garde fascinations of the century, Buzzati the painter was able to blend in his works surrealist intuitions, imaginative ex votos, daring pop art figurations, metaphysical creations, but always preserving an optimistic and somewhat naive background: in his works, however, the thought of the dawn that dispels the nightmares and anguish of the night; it has been said of him that "perhaps even more than his narrative, his painting has therapeutic and moral efficacy".

Additional Information

Artist: Dino Buzzati (1906-1972)

Born in San Pellegrino di Belluno in 1906), Dino Buzzati was an Italian writer, journalist, painter, playwright, librettist, set designer, costume designer and poet. As a student he collaborated with Corriere della Sera as a reporter, editor and special envoy. Author of a large number of surreal and fantastic novels and short stories, so much so that he has been referred to on several occasions as the "Italian Kafka", he is considered, together with Italo Calvino, Tommaso Landolfi and Juan Rodolfo Wilcock, one of the greatest fantastic writers of the twentieth century Italian: his best known book is The Desert of the Tartars, a 1940 novel. Painting was a second profession for Dino Buzzati, so much so that he went so far as to declare: «I am a painter who, as a hobby, unfortunately for a rather prolonged period, also worked as a writer and journalist». Buzzati's pictorial works are strongly linked to the atmospheres and situations of his novels and stories: the author himself defined his paintings as "painted stories", underlining with this expression the strong narrative charge of the canvases, which often feature comic-strip writings or they are divided, just like a comic book page, into various boxes, each of which represents a "moment" of the action. His pictorial activity becomes relevant starting from 1957, the year in which he begins to regularly produce numerous paintings and drawings of various kinds, on subjects that draw on his stories (the fantastic, destiny, waiting, mystery), in a style that recalls symbolism. In the sixties Buzzati began to replace the previous themes with new topics, such as sexuality and crime, and new styles, reminiscent of Italian black comics and pop art. In 1969 he created the 208 color plates of the comic poem, a singular work that reworks the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in a modern key. Buzzati died in Milan in 1972. Milan, January 28, 1972
