Description : Veduta del Naviglio di Milano

Oil on plywood. Signed lower left. The small glimpse of a Milanese canal well expresses the production of Giovanni Riva, who was a painter, sculptor and ceramist. Born and educated in Turin, where he always lived, Giovanni Riva participated in numerous national reviews and exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale of 1940 and 1942. Among his production as a ceramist, the faces of many Lenci dolls are particularly remembered. In painting he devoted himself above all to glimpses of Turin, Milan and Venice, rendered with great spontaneity and immediacy, as well as genre scenes. The systematic study of ancient art, the adherence to the Renaissance ideals of the sculpture of Donatello, Michelangelo and Giambologna pushed Giovanni Riva towards the adoption of an expressive code similar to the taste of the romantic nineteenth century, rather than to futurist dynamism or surrealist visions . The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Giovanni Riva (1890-1973)

Born in Turin in 1890, Giovanni Riva trained artistically at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Turin, graduating in 1908. He exhibited for the first time at the Turin Promotrice in 1912 and, in addition to the annual participation in the Promotrice exhibitions, took part in all the Turin exhibitions of the Friends of Art, the Artistic Circle, the Artistic and Cultural Piedmont, as well as the Florence Triennial and the Venice Biennial of 1940 and 1942. Painter and sculptor, he participates in and wins numerous national competitions for the creation of decorative sculptural elements for Italian squares and gardens. In 1929 he created the ceramic in a veiled deco style, the artist's only one, made for the Lenci factory in Turin; numerous, however, are the models that Riva elaborates for the faces of the well-known Lenci dolls. During the 1930s Riva's artistic production assumed an intermediate position between the neo-Michelangelo accents of his first works (for example of Incubo, presented at the 1919 Promotrice) and the exquisitely decorative taste of the Angelica Fountain built in 1930 for Piazza Solferino in Turin. Despite his training rigidly linked to the classical tradition, the sculptor Riva, beyond the refinement of execution, transmits in his works a completely personal message, made of peace and serenity, of an immediate reality imbued with poetry. On a pictorial level, Giovanni Riva devoted himself mainly to city views, preferring Venice and Milan, but in his production there are also numerous portraits that he executes for the actors and actresses of the Turin film studios, for famous people such as Luigi Einaudi. There are also several of his drawings on paper that reveal the total ease even in the graphic field and the versatility of a cultured artist. Riva died in Turin in 1973.
