Description : Figure

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. The work belongs to Franco Rognoni's second period, in which he recovered from the existential crisis that had distracted him from easel painting and resumed painting with forms inspired by a fantastic vision of life, supported by vivid colour. His painting, which had appeared dark, tormented, became less obsessive, acquiring freer forms inspired by a fantastic, often ironic vision. His vision of life shines through in this work, in this figure of a man leaning against the railing of a terrace overlooking the city, who seems impassive and indifferent, in his elegant suit surrounded by little flowers, while below him, on the lower left, another face (the same man?) wearing a helmet emerges, perhaps a reminder of his war, because it is set against a darker, less sunny city background. The painting style is Rognino's own, where the figures, both men and houses, are drawn in black with a few precise strokes, and then filled in with colour that fades into the background. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Franco Rognoni (1913-1999)

Franco Rognoni, born in Milan on 20 September 1913, showed his passion for drawing and painting from a young age. He attended evening courses at the Castello Sforzesco Higher School of Art in Milan. His education, self-taught and characterized by an openness towards the new arts, experienced a turning point when he frequented the library of the art critic Raffaello Giolli who was the first to recognize his talent. Starting from 1949-1950 he began to exhibit for over thirty years for the Galleria dell'Annunciata in Milan. He forms friendships with artists and poets, such as Quasimodo and Gatto. Giovanni Botta commissioned him to illustrate some great literary masterpieces, which he created using the watercolor technique. The artist follows the developments of twentieth-century European art, but stays away from groups and debates, trying to develop a personal style. At the end of the world war, due to the atomic event, he experienced an existential crisis which he resolved by dedicating himself to illustration for publishing, political and customs drawing. In 1947 he began collaborating with the newspaper Avanti! and work as a set designer. His various experiences and above all the intense activity that came from collaboration with others in the theater and publishing, helped him escape from both existential and artistic solitude. His painting, which appeared dark, tormented, at times overloaded, becomes less obsessive, acquiring freer forms inspired by a fantastic vision reassured by ironic flashes where his unmistakable design arabesques the application of color obtaining a particular esprit de finesse which becomes the his figure. Rognoni died in Milan in 1999.
