Aleardo Villa

Portrait of Young Woman

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. The beautiful portrait features a rosy face framed in a cloud of white, that of a fluffy fur collar that fades into the background of almost the same color. It is of great efficacy and emotional intensity: light in the colors and in the fluffiness of the strokes, rendered with rapid brushstrokes and without outlines, it contrasts the almost childish charm of the pink bow in the hair, with the intense and brooding gaze of the young woman. Another female portrait made by Aleardo Villa in 1892 and sold at auction in London in 1995, which features the same woman seated in the same white dress, has been considered and titled as a portrait of the great actress Eleonora Duse. Appreciated painter, illustrator and advertiser, Villa studied under the direction of Bertini at the Brera Academy. Very skilled in portraying the faces and the female figure, sensual and dressed in fashion, towards the end of his career Villa abandoned painting to devote himself exclusively to advertising graphics: he was appreciated poster designer at the Officine Grafiche Ricordi in Milan. The painting is presented in a contemporary frame.

Stormy Navy Oil on Canvas Italy XIX Century

Oil on canvas. Of this suggestive and fascinating scene of a stormy sea, with ships at the mercy of the waves, there are different versions, inspired by the most important and well-known canvas, the one created by Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), of the same size and preserved at the Castello Sforzesco from Milan. This proposal is very close to a similar work from the Gnecchi collection in Milan, certainly inspired by the Guardesca production: it differs in small details (the color of the flag on the ship on the right, the inclinations of the masts of the ships on the left and in the center, the shape of the clouds), which suggest a good copy, made in the nineteenth century, in the wake of the interest and suggestion for the naturalistic theme and, in particular, for the power of Nature, which developed above all in Italy during the period of Romanticism. On the back of the frame there is a paper label with an inventory number and the initials C.G. (Gnecchi Collection?). On the first canvas, the painting has a very small tear on the right. It is presented in a late 19th century frame.

Oil on Canvas by Gustavo Nacciarone Italy Late '800 Early '900

Portrait of a Girl

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. The Neapolitan artist Gustavo Nacciarone was trained at the Free School of the Teramo painter Giuseppe Bonolis, from whom he inherited the plastic strength of the figures, but soon joined the reform of the painting with a historical subject of the countryman made by Domenico Morelli, which proposed scenes of historical episodes rendered with a veristic language, both in the content, with the use of costumes and objects inspired by real models, as in the stylistic expression, through the naturalistic study of the relationship between light and color and thanks to the adoption of a brushstroke modern. In the same style, while continuing to create views taken from life or scenes borrowed from the repertoire of everyday life, Nacciarone also tried his hand at orientalist subjects, and from around 1880 he was also attracted by Japonism and finally by the neo-Pompeian subject. Gustavo Nacciarone was also a very skilled draftsman and illustrator for various printed periodicals specialized in figurative arts, and he also devoted himself to painting for sacred and decorative commissions. He participated in exhibitions throughout Italy, but it was above all in Naples that, through his relations with the most fashionable patrons and collectors of the city, he favored the diffusion of the painting of many artists of his time. The work presented here, a very realistic and expressive portrait of a girl of the common people, well expresses her painting with a broad brushstroke, opaque and earthy colors but with chiaroscuro effects and well-defined shadows. It is presented in a coeval frame, from the late 19th-early 20th century.

Oil on Cardboard North Italian Schools Italy XIX Century

Oil on cardboard. North-ItalIan school. The two small landscapes offer views of the countryside with the remains of ancient stone walls and wayfarers on the path that pass under the monumental arches. The atmosphere is romantic, imbued with pink colors. Although more landscape than monumental, the two squares are fully part of the production linked to the Grand Tour, the journey through Europe - and with the main stops in Italy! - that the young people of the European high aristocracy completed, upon completion of their university studies, to enrich their cultural background. This fashion favored a large production of small paintings of the places visited, in memory of the stage. The two paintings are presented in 19th century frames.

Pastel on Cardboard by Ernest A. Duez XIX Century

Twilight landscape

Pastel on cardboard. Signed E. Duez lower right. On the back label of the Buenos Aires Art Gallery, with exposure date of 1898. Painter, pastelist and watercolorist, the Parisian artist Ernest Ange Duez stood out for his subtle and sensitive line. He portrayed scenes from everyday life, portraits, religious themes, genre and marine scenes. The latter in particular were always made en plein air in Villerville in Normandy and in Le Havre and always portray the sea from the coast. Certainly close to Impressionism, Duez formulated his own pictorial modality which was called the "juste milieu" (the right middle way), between the conservative realist painting of the Salon and the most conspicuous manifestations of full impressionism. The painting is presented in a contemporary frame.

Church interior

Oil painting on canvas. Signed on the back. Born into a wealthy Venetian family, Vittore Zanetti Zilla began to paint as a self-taught, drawing inspiration from Giacomo Favretto, a family friend, before moving on to the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Guglielmo Ciardi. In fact, on his model, he passes from genre scenes of his first period to landscape painting. Beginning to travel, initially in Italy, he comes very close to the Neapolitan school; from 1898 he began his long journeys abroad, which brought him closer to the most widespread European landscape instances, leading him to adopt a very modern pictorial language. He sets up his first personal exhibitions especially in the German and Austrian area, where he is successful; the foreign contamination also occurs in the choice of the pictorial technique, moving from watercolor to oil painting and finally to tempera, which will characterize him later. With the First World War Zanetti Zilla returned to Italy, first to Florence and then to Milan, but getting very close to the genre of the Venetian landscape and finally becoming passionate about still life. With the transition to the use of tempera, Zanetti Zilla refines that technique that will become his distinctive feature: through large and fat brushstrokes, he creates works that are intensely vivid in color and veiled with a porcelain sheen obtained thanks to the final oil varnish. The work presented proposes the interior of a church with figures in prayer. The pictorial technique already expresses that contamination from Northern European painting, placing it already in the period of the late 19th-early 20th century. The painting is presented in a gilded frame from the early 1900s.
