Woodland scene 1926

Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated lower right. The Turin artist Mario Sturani joined the Futurist Movement in his youth. From 1927 he began his collaboration with the Lenci ceramics factory, where he was able to renew the formal and decorative repertoire of Lenci ceramics in an anti-rhetorical key, avoiding the stylistic features of the art of the regime. Even in the field of serial reproduction, Sturani was able to express the inventive freedom of artistic inspiration: on the surfaces of the vases, for example, he transposed the naturalistic subjects dear to him, sometimes transfiguring them into fabulous tones; in other cases a certain déco taste, the dynamic rhythms of Futurist ancestry or the cubist decompositions, like the elegant twentieth century stylizations. Between 1928 and 1930 Sturani painted a series of small paintings, with intimate tones, depicting landscapes or still lifes. For over thirty years Sturani also worked as an entomologist, within the Institute of Agricultural Entomology of the Turin university, and his studies were also widely appreciated by the academic world for the scientific value and the methodological rigor with which they were conducted. . The small drawing presented here belongs to the early production of Sturani, even before the collaboration with the Lenci manufacture. In this glimpse of the countryside with woods and fawns, we find his propensity to transfuse the landscapes he reproduces in a fairy tale key. In an exposed frame.

Two Mountain Landscapes

Oil on plywood. Both signed at the bottom. On the back there is another signature with titles that identify the painted places and dates, The bigger one (44x34cm) from 1947, represents Cordevole Valley (Belluno); the other one (39.5x35cm) from 1962, represents The Grignetta from Pian Dei Resinelli. Although Giuseppe Valsecchi, an artist from Lecco, shared the human and social commitment of the Milanese Corrente movement (to which artists such as Guttuso, Treccani and Sassu adhered), he did not neglect a more highly evocative and intimist vein that can be seen in his portraits and landscapes, inspired by views from the windows of his homes.

Landscape

Oil on board. Signature and date at the bottom left. On the back there is a stamp of "Domenico De Bernardi-Besozzo" and authenticity. De Bernardi's painting is part of the 19th and 20th century Lombard landscape tradition. He always lived in Besozzo, his birthplace in the province of Varese, but travelled extensively in and out of Italy, gathering impressions and searching for new landscapes to revive them in his work. In particular, he gained new inspiration from a trip to Libya in the 1930s, from which he returned with a more lively and Mediterranean palette. Landscape painting was his favourite genre, but he was also often attracted to 'still life' with equally significant results. The small landscape presented here is a view of hills with higher peaks in the background, perhaps the artist's native pre-Alpine areas; a small village fills the centre of the scene, in which the widespread fences of the crops stand out in particular. The painting comes in a coeval frame.

Landscape 1927

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. On the back there is a cartouche with the address of the artist's studio and the title of the work; there is also a pencil-made note from the owner (a painter too) "Gift of the author, 19-03-1930". Noel Quintavalle (known under the pseudonym Noelqui), a native of Ferrara but raised and artistically trained in Milan, was a multifaceted artist. Graduated in architecture, he was self-taught in the arts, but after the great war in which he actively participated, he quickly distinguished himself and exhibited in various national and international exhibitions; in the meantime he also carried out literary activities by publishing various volumes (satire, fairy tales, short stories, memories of the war) and also experimented with sculpture and xylography. His pictorial production, which began as a pointillist, was then influenced by the synthesis of modern painting. The subjects most dear to him were the portrait (with a preference for particular female figures, such as dancers) and the landscape. The landscape presented here - a hilly glimpse, with a wide view that opens from the path under the leafy tree - belongs to the period of Noelqui still close to Divisionism, in which he used a technique with small, almost point-like brushstrokes, giving a greater brightness and surrounding each element or figure with a magical aura. The work is presented in a contemporary frame.

Libeccio

Oil on table. Signed lower right. On the back, further signature, title and cartouche of the Galleria Dedalo in Milan. Giulio Cesare Vinzio, an artist of Livornese origin, artistically trained in Florence, attending the studio of Giovanni Fattori. In the countryside around Florence he begins to paint landscapes from life, with oxen, peasants, horses as protagonists, landscapes of the Maremma, rendered with bright colors and strong chromatic contrasts. From the beginning of the twentieth century, while exhibiting throughout Italy and abroad, he moved to Piedmont and approached pointillist painting: while continuing to prefer rural landscapes and bucolic realities, he represented them in the atmospheres of twilight, nocturnal, dawns, no longer made with broad brushstrokes, but small strokes divided between them. In 1921 he joined the Labronico Group, which brought him closer to the realist naturalism of the origins. The work presented here offers a glimpse of a Maremma beach, beaten by the libeccio, the wind that blows from the south across the Mediterranean. The technique is that of realism, using large and superimposed brush strokes. In frame.

Gouache on paper. Neapolitan school of the nineteenth century. On the back at the bottom label with the title. The gouache is part of the typical Grand Tour production, which made the Gulf of Naples and the views of Vesuvius recurring and privileged subjects of nineteenth-century landscape painting. The pink shades of the sky that are reflected on the smoking volcano and the blues of the sky and the sea create a typically romantic atmosphere. The scene is animated by numerous figures of commoners and fishing boats. The work is presented in a late 19th century frame.

Born in 1905, Gaetano Valbusa worked for over forty years as a worker in the Brescia Mechanical Workshops, until retirement, devoting himself to painting only as a passion. Thanks to his business trips, he was able to portray glimpses of the whole world "en plein air", even if the glimpses of Brescia places are the most recurring subject. Affiliated to the Associazione Artisti Bresciani, he was able to exhibit his works and make himself known by critics . In his canvases the landscapes are permeated with great serenity and tranquility, an elegy of serene memories of real life. The painting proposed here presents a glimpse of a town on Lake Garda. It is presented in a frame.

He specialized in landscape and embarked on an exhibition career concentrated above all in Milan. The subject proposed here, although of a landscape nature, is part of a rare production of a series of small pictures, almost sketches, which leads back to the First World War, in particular to the military expedition of an Italian body to Macedonia in 1916, sent by the government to the aim to counter the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian forces during the First World War and to control that territory. Moreover, there is no documentation of the painter's direct participation in this war campaign. The painting is framed.

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. Further signature, title and date on the back. Born in Venice in 1872, Vittore Antonio Cargnel enrolled at the Venice Academy, but his training took place above all in the studio of Cesare Laurenti, a well-known and esteemed painter with a symbolist tendency, and in the observation of the works of Ciardi, Favretto and Nono. He participated in the first three editions of the Venice Biennale, with works of character between the symbolist and the intimist; subsequently its production, mainly landscape, became particularly attentive to atmospheric variations. In 1910 he moved to Sacile, where he remained until the defeat of Caporetto, to then return to Milan where he remained until his death in 1931. The work presented here belongs to his last period, and offers a glimpse of Pofabbro, a hamlet of the Val Colvera, in the Carnic Prealps, where the artist spent his last years of life. The work is presented in a contemporary frame.

In 1923, Zambelli painted a series of frescoes depicting the history of the animal and plant world at the Casartelli Science Museum in Como. In 1927, on the occasion of the "International Conference of Physicists", an event whose scientific sessions were held in Como in the halls of the Carducci Institute and which attracted the fathers of modern physics to the city, Zambelli decorated the walls of the Congress Hall - renamed the Nobel Hall - with medallions bearing the names of the Congress members. Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom right. Signature and title on the back. Cristoforo De Amicis received his artistic training first at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, then at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, where he lived all his life, painting and teaching at the Academy. At the beginning of the 1930s, he temporarily gave up his career as a painter to devote himself to architecture, but then returned to figurative painting. During the Second World War he moved towards post-cubist expressions, but in the 1960s, due to his wife's severe depression, the artist moved towards a more intimate production, in which the theme of the nude and still life found a place. At the end of the 1970s he returned to painting landscapes of the Lodi countryside, such as the one shown here, which flanked still lifes, floral compositions and Madonnas: in this production De Amicis moved towards a style close to Chiarism, which was very successful. The painting is presented in a frame.
