Guido SomelIi

Old Houses on the Mugnone

Oil on plywood. Signed lower right. Further signature and title on the back. The Florentine artist Guido Somelli, who trained as a self-taught person, made his debut at a very young age in his city, to arrive soon to participate in Italian and foreign shows and exhibitions. His production tends, as he himself said, to "good painting, without subject specializations, convinced that truth is pure beauty and poetry and that the study of art has no end other than life". Recurring are the landscapes and glimpses of Florence and the surrounding countryside, such as the one presented here, a country mouse along the Mugnone, a tributary stream of the Arno. The work is presented in a frame.

Two Mountain Landscapes

Oil on plywood. Both signed at the bottom. On the back there is another signature with titles that identify the painted places and dates, The bigger one (44x34cm) from 1947, represents Cordevole Valley (Belluno); the other one (39.5x35cm) from 1962, represents The Grignetta from Pian Dei Resinelli. Although Giuseppe Valsecchi, an artist from Lecco, shared the human and social commitment of the Milanese Corrente movement (to which artists such as Guttuso, Treccani and Sassu adhered), he did not neglect a more highly evocative and intimist vein that can be seen in his portraits and landscapes, inspired by views from the windows of his homes.

Oil on Plywood by Giovanni Cavalleri Italy XX Century

Towards the Dunes, Libyan memories

Oil on plywood. Signed lower left. The title is in pencil on the back. Work of the painter Giovanni Cavalleri who established himself mainly as a fresco painter, creating frescoes for numerous churches in the Bergamo valleys. Moreover, he did not disdain portraiture and landscaping, aimed at representing glimpses of his mountains but also seascapes and glimpses of the places he visited. In this canvas he proposes an unusual subject but in vogue for the orientalist tendencies of the second half of the 19th century: as specified by the title on the back, it shows a memory of his trip to Libya depicting a glimpse of the desert with two figures of running camels . The work is presented in a contemporary relacquered frame.

'Le Piante as dan la Buna' 1962

Oil on cardboard. On the back there is a label with the name of the artist, the date and the title. Belonging to a family of Piedmontese painters, Sandro Vacchetti was an eclectic artist, who experimented not only in painting but also as an illustrator, set designer and above all as a ceramist. Sandro Vacchetti's pictorial production can easily be divided into two main thematic groups: that of portraits, whose stylistic language is similar to that used by the artist for his ceramic creations, and that of landscapes, which mostly portray places familiar to the teacher, linked to childhood memories: places of the soul, filtered through the emotions that make them even more intimate. The small landscape view proposed here belongs to this second group. In frame.

Oil on plywood

Charles Moody (1979), oil on plywood. Signed on the back. The work was exhibited at the solo exhibition "Borderland" at the Gallery 8 in Milan Corso Venezia, as evidenced by the paper to the back lable. Charles Moody graduated in 2003 at the Art Institute of Boston and, after three years in Milan, chooses to live in New York. In his art the focus at trial (conceptual art, process art) rather than to the image content and it is in this scrap that painting is at its best. An art that was created by the approval of television images (almost never films) and in particular from popular soap operas. Moody's work goes beyond the mass media image by customizing the selection for special images that, in his view, offer a potential narrative; are images of transition, moments of transition from one scene to the next. The artist uses a manual oil painting to reproduce the low quality of the tv picture extolling the "blurring" of blur. We are facing a loss of spatial dimension, in a temporality confused-diffuse-intangible which is difficult to recognize the boundaries ("Borderland"). In these perceptual distortions, in which time dilates expands, each painting represents a "indiscernibilità" in which the recognition of the object that takes second place. The time of Moody is neither Chronicle nor history but suspension. (From "Charles Moody, Borderland", curated by Gianni Romano, exhibition catalogue, CorsoVeneziaOtto, November-December 2009)
