Paintings under glass, on a convex glass surface. The two oval paintings offer landscapes enlivened by figurines of people intent on various activities: in one the setting is in the mountains, with small chalets below by the stream and below rocky peaks; in the other instead at night, a placid river flows near wooded banks, illuminated by the full moon. The paintings are presented in contemporary gilded frames, to be restored due to deficiencies.

Pencil on paper. Good use of the hatching and chiaroscuro are shown in this portrait of a young woman. The portrait comes with a 19th century wooden frame that had beeen embellished with leafy and floral leather inserts; the frame has some color drops and some missing parts.

Oil on canvas. The painting celebrates the memory of a deceased person: it represents a tombstone with the name of the dead and the dates, laying on the bare ground in a desert landscape, faded with a sunset in the background, but surrounded by a garland of lively flowers. A white lily stands out from all, stretched out upwards, but with a broken stem, forcing the corolla to turn towards the ground: it is the "memento mori", the symbol of the transience of life. The beautiful painting is presented in a gilded coeval frame.

OIl on canvas. North Italy School. Small glimpse of a steam that flows between the houses; we can see two figures, one is a soldier that is passing under the bridge on his boat; the other man is crossing the bridge while pulling a dunkey that is pulling a cart. The painting needs to be restored because of several drops of color of which the biggest one is on the left side of the bridge. It comes in a gilded coeval frame.

The picture proposes a glimpse of the countryside centrally occupied by an architectural structure on several levels, a farmhouse in which arches, small columns, stairs and entrances intersect, all occupied by weeds. On the path and in front of the structure, the scene is enlivened by figures of peasants and common people. The rosy light from the sky spreads over all the elements, creating a romantic atmosphere. The work, relined, is presented in a late 1800s-early 1900s gilded frame, with various drops of color.

Landscape with River and Figures

Watercolor on paper. Signed lower right. Giuseppe Gabani, who was a Cavalry officer and participated in many uprisings of the Risorgimento, stood out in particular for his equestrian subjects, battle scenes, orientalism, made with vivacity of color and pictorial emphasis. Here instead we have a delicate watercolor of his, which offers a landscape with a river flowing in the countryside and walking figurines: in Gabani's production there are actually many of these landscapes, calm in colors and rather pervaded by peace and tranquility. Oil on cardboard. Delicate portrait of a sober bourgeois woman, with a set of jewels and a delicate lace on the collar to embellish and lighten the black coat. The painting is presented in a coeval tray frame.

Campania Landscape with Figures and Buildings

The landscape view offers a glimpse of a village on the slopes of barren rocky peaks, which refer to the Campania hinterland; some polar figures transit on the bridge which gives access to the village. Micheroux, belonging to the Posillipo school, or the nineteenth-century school of Neapolitan artists dedicated to landscape painting, created several glimpses of the Campania hinterland, but little is left of his production and little is known about his life. The painting has some small drops of color. It is presented in a late 19th century frame.

Wooden sculptures. It is a composition of two wooden heads, a male one and a female one, placed on a board and framed by a gilded frame of 19th century. The heads might had been the handles of a canteran of 17th century.

Landscape with Figures and Bread Oven

Episodes from the Life of John the Baptist

Five drawings mixed technique on paper, depicting scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist, as recounted in the Gospels (The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the birth, the Baptism of Jesus, beheading, Salome presents the severed head to Herod). The back label specifies that the designs are copied from the cycle of the Chapel of St. John the Baptist in the famous Basilica of San Lorenzo in Genoa. In the frame.

Studies of Nature

Group of 12 etchings on a hardboard notebook. From the catalogue raisonné of Kobell's works, published in 1822 by Baron de Stengel, it is also possible to recover the titles of the individual engravings, which depict figures from popular life. The first one also has the title: "Etudes d'après nature, dessinées et gravées par Ferdinand Kobell,...". (Studies from life, drawn and printed by Ferdinand Kobell), with the Parisian locations mentioned below. The titles of the other figures, in the order of their presentation in our collection, are as follows: Return from the Market, The Beggars, The Messengers, The Stonemason (Sculpture Seller), The Brush Seller, The Vegetable Seller, The Hat Seller, The Junk Dealer (Print Seller), The Peasant at the Market (Sleeping), The Second-hand Clothes Dealer, The Blind Man.

Male Portrait 1877

Pencil on paper. Signed and dated lower right, in the oval. It is an early work by the well-known sculptor Luigi De Paoli, corresponding to the years of study at the Venice Academy. He also devoted himself to painting only in the last years of his life. The work is presented in a late 19th century frame.

The Showdown

Oil painting on canvas. French school of the 19th century. In the tasty scene, a satirical episode linked to the French revolution is presented: on a carriage that bears on the door the three lilies of France with the initials LR, referring to the royal dynasty (Louis roi?), some people seem to want to leave hastily, while an innkeeper holding the bill tries to get paid, however held back by a guard. At the top left, the sign of the tavern reads "L'agneau a moderé", or "The lamb has moderated", an ironic expression meaning that until then it was tolerated (the regime) thanks to the sacrifice of someone, but the moment of reckoning has now come. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame.

Old Naples's View 1933

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Ricciardi was a prolific Neapolitan painter considered by some to be the seed of Neapolitan impressionism; he painted seascapes, beaches, views, landscapes and Neapolitan customs and traditions of his city as his main subjects. In his works the intense chromaticism, the study from life, the abandonment of the drawing and the limpid and terse light that pervades the scenes, reveal the knowledge of Impressionism, due to the presence in Naples of Giuseppe De Nittis. This glimpse of Naples has been repeatedly replicated by the artist, and in one of these works also appears the title "Impression of old Naples", absent here. It is an intense glimpse of the atmosphere of an old popular Neapolitan street, enlivened by a market populated by human figures, with old peeling walls decorated with hanging clothes and planters. The work is rather dark, a brown monochromatism prevails, interrupted only by the brighter colors of the human figures; the only source of light comes from the artificial lights turned on in the shop down the street. The work has a slight damage in the upper right corner (small cut of the canvas). It is presented in a coeval frame.
