Four Women 1986

Etching and aquatint on paper. Signed in pencil lower right; serial number 54/95 lower left. The work, created in 1986, proposes one of the most recurring themes in Renato Guttuso's production, the woman, which he always proposes in a passionate way in the tone, incisive and marked in the sign, to capture the gaze in an erotic and sensual emphasis . Inspiring muse and undisputed protagonist of many works by the artist from Bagheria was Marta Marzotto, whose features are also found in this work. They are four women and yet she is only one; they are close to each other almost touching, yet each ignores the presence of the one next to it. There is no narrative intention in Guttuso, but the women chase each other on the surface of the sheet as in a study book, notes for the great compositions on which the artist works. Therefore, as is characteristic of the studies, what interests Guttuso here is to follow the unfolding of the signs until they are recomposed in a synthesis that transforms them into a complete image. The etching delicately traces contours and internal lines that a few strokes of aquatint barely color; or play freely on the intricate masses of hair that have always been a typically and exclusively graphic element for Guttuso. The lithograph is mounted on a panel with a visible frame.

Hill Landscape with Cottage

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. A glimpse of rolling hills characterized by the brilliance of the green color, in a wide range of shades enhanced by soft edges, surmounted by the blue sky and interrupted only by a cottage, which also incorporates the same colors of the earth and the countryside. It is the work of the young Milanese artist Amerigo Canegrati, who had great fame in the Thirties, and is considered among the representatives of the Lombard pictorial trends of the Italian twentieth century; his painting expresses deep coloristic qualities both in landscape paintings and in compositions and figures. The work is presented in a style frame.

Glimpse of Mandello Lario 1909

Oil on canvas. Signature and location (Mandello) lower left. On the back additional signature, date and title in full. Riccardo Pellegrini, a Milanese painter, was a pupil of Domenico Morelli and was educated in the climate of romanticism. He was a landscape painter and genre painter, but he also created valuable still lifes, with bright colors and a precise and realistic drawing. His landscape production drew on the various places he visited and lived, in Italy and abroad, especially in Spain and France. In this landscape, Pellegrini offers a glimpse of the mountain that overlooks the town on the shores of Lake Como: a barren and bare mountain, albeit inhabited, with the hut on the top and a female figurine that fills the buckets at the stream of flowing water. between the rocks; the colors are those of the winter mists, divided almost transversely between the gray-blue of the upper part, with clouds laden with rain that dominate the peaks on the other side of the lake (which can be sensed, without being seen), and the green-brown of the land that occupies the lower half, with the branches of the bare trees stretched out to connect the two halves. The quiet of the mountains, the title of the work, clearly shines through and pervades the mind of the observer. The painting is presented in a contemporary frame.

Figure with flowers

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. On the back further signature and dedication with declaration of authenticity. Influenced in his Parisian years by contact with Expressionism, Fantuzzi placed a marked emphasis in his works on the expression of emotions, of moods. His figures are therefore summary, never completely defined, rather deformed into elongated forms, the faces anonymous, and placed in solitary and melancholy settings; On the other hand, color dominates in his canvases in its most marked ranges, usually the cold tones of blues, greens and purples, which create sometimes violent contrasts. Fantuzzi's main themes are the loneliness of the metropolis and the difficulty of communication in interpersonal relationships, often expressed in solitary figures like the one presented here, a woman with a bunch of flowers in her hand, on a fiery red background, devoid of other figures. The work is presented in a style frame.

The Vases on Blue Background, 1961

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. On the back there is a further signature, date, and handwritten writing with the title of the work and the location (From the Milan studio). There is also a label from the Gussoni Gallery in Milan relating to the personal exhibition of the artist in 1962. Self-taught Milanese artist, Giovan Francesco Gonzaga declared "my true teacher is Nature", and faithful to it, he devoted himself mainly to scenes with horses (a passion inherited from his experience in the Savoia Cavalleria during the war) to landscapes and still lifes , always depicted "en plein air". Vittorio Sgarbi wrote about him: "Giovan Francesco Gonzaga's wisdom lies in the design, which is strong and decisive ..... The images vibrate with restlessness, in the sign of man's struggle against himself, in the hell of a a story that always seems to repeat the same drama. But if the preparatory drawing is admirable, the color of this artist has a regality and a sensitivity that come from a musical perception of the color, where the palette is expressed in sudden, variations and rhythms buttons ". In this composition the color blue dominates, represented in a wide range of shades that define and differentiate the vases, of all different shapes, the candlestick and the backgrounds: the chromatic games create a lively but personal, intimate, and the artist seems to express through the sense of sight, his moods, his inner perceptions of the reality that surrounds him. The painting has two small patches on the back. It is presented in a stylish frame.

Religious Subject Oil on Canvas Italy 1935 Ca.

The canvas depicts King David playing the harp. Depicted with Ethiopian features, the painting underlines the direct descent of the people from the Davidic lineage. It is part of a group of seven works, which arrived in Italy at the end of the 1930s; they were purchased directly on site, as we have reconstructed from the correspondence and family photos, by the lawyer xxx, grandfather of the owners, who was sent as the legal representative of an Italian production company in 1935 in Ethiopia, and from there he was expelled in 1938 by General Graziani because he was considered anti-fascist. The canvases remained in the family collection, in the family palace, and are now re-proposed in all their expressive power. Ethiopia has a very particular history: located between Africa and Asia, and between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, it was a crossroads and meeting point of different cultures, also stimulated by the constant and intense trade flows. Five centuries BC the Aksum dynasty was established; under this reign, in the fourth century after Christ, Christianity was established as the state religion, in its Coptic Orthodox version. The medieval sacred texts also speak, however, of a direct relationship with one of the ten Jewish tribes, who took refuge in Ethiopia, from which the royal lineage was derived through the queen of Sheba. And in fact in Ethiopia the Falascià lineage still lives today, black Jews whose first historical records date back to 600 AD. Ethiopia was therefore a Jewish-Christian bulwark, with African influences, but to be considered almost the southern edge of Mediterranean culture.

The canvas depicts the meeting between the queen of Sheba and king Solomon. The queen is represented seated on a throne, in the center of the scene, and to the left appears the following, which brings rich gifts to the king. Solomon is sitting on his throne, characterised by the image of the lion on the side, behind him entered his court. In the underlying part, the musicians emphasize the character of the feast of the meeting. It is part of a group of seven works, which arrived in Italy at the end of the '30s; were purchased directly on-site , as we have reconstructed from the correspondence and from the family photos, from the lawyer xxx, grandfather of the owners, who was sent as a legal representative of a company of Italian production in 1935 in Ethiopia, and from here it was driven out in 1938 by general Graziani, because it was considered anti-fascist. The paintings remained in the family collection, in the palace of the family, and are now presented in all their expressive force. And in fact, in Ethiopia still live today), the line of the Falascià, black jews, whose first historical mention dates back to 600 after Christ. Ethiopia was then a bastion of jewish-christian, with african influences, but to be considered almost the southern edge of the mediterranean culture.

Historical Subject Oil on Canvas 1935

Ethiopian art, c. 1935

The painting, oil on canvas, is in reality most likely a scene that overlaps various typical subjects that are very much reproduced in traditional Ethiopian art of the early 1900s. A recurring theme is that of slave hunting. A painting similar to ours for the arrangement of the scenes and narration is in the Bremen museum and takes up the story of Iyassu, prince of the Amhara population, who fights after the death of Menelik II the people of the Gimirra, who occupied the southern part of Ethiopia. The painting contrasts the Amhara, dressed and with the commanders with a sort of fringed hat, to the "barbarians" Gimirra, half naked, who are killed and emasculated. The expedition ended with the acquisition of about 20,000 new slaves. In fact, in our painting there are also quotations that refer to the action of Ras Tafari, who in 1928, after the coronation a negus, represses the revolt of the Oromo, in the province of Uollo. A further mention is in the presence of numerous rifles, which recall the battle of 1930 with the definitive defeat of Gugsa Oliè and the subsequent appointment of Ras Tafari as emperor. So the painting, made around 1935 for an Italian client, adds up these themes in our opinion. It is part of a group of seven works, which arrived in Italy at the end of the 1930s; were purchased directly on site, as we have reconstructed from the correspondence and family photos, by the lawyer xxx, grandfather of the owners, who was sent as legal representative of an Italian production company in 1935 in Ethiopia, and from there he was expelled in 1938 by General Graziani, because he was considered anti-fascist.
