Description

The sculpture rests on a circular base with phytomorphic and floral decorations in relief, on which traces of the old gilding can still be seen. It has the features of an Indian woman depicted in a dynamic pose: one foot rests on the ground, while the opposite leg is raised, as if in the momentum of a race. The arm raised above the head is mutilated at the wrist, which was originally intended to support a torch that acted as a candle holder. Dressed in a short, multicoloured exotic dress, around her neck jewels of coloured pearls, while on her head she wears a feathered turban. Made of so-called cold-painted Vienna bronze, a widespread production in the Austrian city in the late 19th and early 20th century, it actually consists of an alloy composed of different metals. One of the most famous producers was Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861-1936), owner of an important Viennese foundry, known for the production of small bronzes with exotic themes.
