Description : Paesaggio con figure

Oil on canvas cardboard. French school of the 19th century. With a romantic flavor, the scene represents figures in gallant entertainment, in a verdant and shady countryside, with a glimpse of a wall decorated with amphora on the left. The work is part of that landscape production which in the 19th century finally became an independent genre and acquired the same dignity as historical painting. Previously, in fact, academic theorists were convinced that landscape painting could not represent ennobling events or ideas, but was only a source of entertainment. During the nineteenth century, on the other hand, landscapes conquered a safer place in popular affection than any other form of art, and people came to enjoy and appreciate a peaceful view or a panorama with scenes of serene life, which transmitted peace and serenity. The painting is presented in an early 20th century style frame.
