At the Blacksmith 1835

Oil on wooden table. Signed and dated on the barrel at the bottom center. The tasty scene is set in a farrier's shop, a shed close to a building: in the center the farrier and his assistant shoe a horse, which occupies the entire right portion of the scene; on the left, a musician along the road is attacked by a dog, which is pushed away by another worker, who tries to chase him away by waving his hat. In the upper part of the scene, the facade of the building with the grated windows animated by flowers and cat, and the votive loggia with the statue of a saint; on the roofing boards of the shed, various birds, especially pigeons, scurry and peck. The painting is part of the typical production of Johann Michael Neder, who preferred to paint scenes of popular life or the Viennese bourgeoisie; his scenes are full of figures and elements of daily life, carefully detailed. The painting shows traces of old restorations.

XVIII century

Under glass painting. Christ on the Cross and the Magdalene kneeling at his feet, naked and with long hair down according to the traditional iconography; on the ground near the Cross, a skull, traditional Memento mori, and an alabaster jar, the one containing the precious oil with which, according to the Gospel story, the Magdalene anointed the feet of Jesus as a sign of devotion in recognition of royalty. The painting is presented in a coeval wooden frame.

Bertoldt Brecht 1973

Mixed media on paper. Below you will find the signature, the date and the title of the work. Bellandi, born in Milan in 1931, was a very talented painter and set designer. In the 1950s he joined Existential Realism, a very active artistic movement in Milan, becoming one of the exponents of this current. Bellandi is an artist gifted with talent and creativity, a lover of freedom of expression and beauty, and performs works of interesting reading with intense but harmonious chromatic tones. Expressive intensity is also found in this portrait of the famous poet, which seems almost a sketch for the "test" of the nose at the bottom. In frame.

Sant'Antonio Abate e San Paolo l'Eremita

Oil on canvas. It is a large Nordic landscape, dominated by rocky peaks on the left and a lake with a central island on the right; in the foreground some figures that tell the legend of San Paolo Eremita, on the left, and Sant'Antonio abate, on the right with a centaur. The Golden Legend of Jacopo da Varagine tells that Saint Anthony the Abbot visited Paul the hermit, who for forty years had lived in solitude fed by a crow who brought him bread every day. Sant'Antonio asked for news from a centaur, who also in this scene shows him the way to follow with his arm. The restored and relined work is presented in a period frame.

The Cinquale 1956

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. On the back further signature with title and date; also certificate of authenticity signed by the artist in 1973 and confirmation of his daughter Renata Lilloni. The landscape view presented here refers to a locality in the province of Massa-Carrara, Cinquale, and more specifically to its wildlife oasis of "Lago di Porta"; it well expresses the "painting with a light background" which was sovereign in Lilloni's works and which made him one of the greatest exponents of Lombard Chiarism: the brightness and chromatic delicacy indeed characterize his paintings, mainly landscapes. The work is presented in a frame.

Oil painting on canvas. Intense representation of the Virgin and Child holding the Cross in her hands, a prophetic symbol of her Passion. The work is characterized by the movement of the bodies and fabrics of Maria's clothes, which wrap around the body of the Child almost to surround him, to wrap him in a protective embrace. On the other hand, Jesus seems to free himself, reaching out towards his destiny, while Mary's gaze seems almost resigned, humbly turned downwards. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a late 19th-early 20th century frame.

Old Milan the Verziere

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. On the back on the frame the title and further signature. It is a pleasant and lively glimpse of the Verziere (now Largo Augusto), the Milanese market where it was possible to buy fruit, vegetables, flowers and various other foodstuffs; in the center stands the Colonna del Redentore, also known as Colonna del Verziere. Castelfranchi, Genoese by birth but Milanese by adoption, starting from the 1930s painted numerous glimpses of the Milanese city, in oil and watercolor. The work is presented in a frame.

Oil on canvas. At the top right appears the signature "Francesco Santacaterina da Monteleone pinxit in 1856". Of this painter, originally from Monteleone di Calabria, now Vibo Valentia, we know three altarpieces made in the same period of our painting in various churches of Strongoli, another Calabrian town in the province of Crotone. The blades are all of a sacred subject. Instead we have here a portrait of a middle-class family, father, mother and little son wearing traditional clothes; the child holds a dove in his arms, tied to a cord. The work has been restored, on the back there are signs of patches. It is presented in a stylish frame.

The Magdalene is depicted in prayer before the Crucifix, naked and with her long hair down, attributes that characterize her. and with his hands over a skull, traditional Memento mori. The painting has slight color losses. The work is presented in a coeval frame, applied to a larger frame from the end of the 19th century.

Oil on canvas. The young martyr Margaret of Antioch is representd in ecstasy whit her iconographic symbols: she's holding martyrdom's palm and the Cross, the dragon at her feet. According to tradition, the ypung girl had been imprisoned during Diocletian's persecution because she was christian and she was visited by the devil in the guise of a dragon that swallowed her: Margaret ripped up its womb with the Cross and she came out victorious; because of that she's invoked as the patroness of pregnant women to have an easy childbirth. Restored and displayed in frame.
