Diana is an Italic, Latin and Roman goddess, lady of the woods, protector of wild animals, guardian of springs and streams, protector of women, to whom she ensured painless births, and dispenser of sovereignty. Often this Roman goddess corresponds to the goddess Artemis of Greek mythology, but according to some scholars the fusion between the two figures took place only at a later time. Artemis-Diana, goddess of hunting, virginity, archery, woods and the Moon, was further identified with other oriental female deities during the religious syncretism of the imperial age. According to the legend, Diana - a young virgin skilled in hunting, irascible as well as vindictive - was a lover of solitude and an enemy of banquets; she used to wander around isolated places. In the name of Love she had made a vow of chastity and for this reason she was affable, if not protective, only towards those who - like Hippolytus and the nymphs who promised to keep their virginity - entrusted themselves to her. Diana is the twin of Apollo (or Phoebus) and is the daughter of Jupiter and Latona.Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000
