Description : Gruppo di quattro foto di bambini

Photographs retouched with pastels. Signed bottom right. On the back of three of them is the date 11 November 1930. A photographic sequence of the portrait of three children is shown, who slightly change their pose or expression. They are the work of the British photographer Eva Barrett who, after an initial experience as a painter, decided to dedicate herself to photography, thinking that "it was better to be a first-rate photographer than a second-rate [painter]. Having moved to Rome in 1913, she established her laboratory here. Pictorialist, with a small camera, Eva Barrett created her own photographic method that was reminiscent of drawing sketches: she applied a few very light pencil strokes, managing to create subdued images but with particularly dense blacks, thus maintaining the characteristics of photography and portraits. In this way he was very successful and his career took off. Eva Barrett photographed the Italian royal family, the wives and children of foreign ambassadors, as well as received numerous commissions from European royalty in Belgium, Sweden, Greece. The four portraits are presented in style frames.

Additional Information

Artist: Eva Barrett (1879-1949 ca.)

Born in England in Hertfordshire in 1879, Eva Barrett initially devoted herself to painting but with disappointing results. Having moved to Rome in 193, she began to devote herself to photography, thinking that "it was better to be a first-rate photographer than a second-rate [painter]. Pictorialist, with a small camera, he created his own photographic method that resembled sketches of drawings. She developed a form of "pastel portraiture" which stood out for its particular refinement in its execution: instead of distorting the photo-portrait with an exaggerated use of pencil or pastel, Barrett applied a few very light pencil strokes, managing to create subdued but particularly dense blacks, thus maintaining the characteristics of photography and portraits. In this way he was very successful and his career took off. He photographed the Italian royal family, the wives and children of foreign ambassadors, as well as received numerous commissions from European royalty in Belgium, Sweden, Greece. In 1933 Barrett's story became intertwined with that of Ottavia Vitagliano (1894-1975) who, after the death of her husband Nino, decided to take over the publishing empire and also take on Barrett and Carell (another photographer in vogue in the world of the Roman aristocracy), among the photographers of the magazine Eva, a weekly magazine for Italian women, for which they created several covers. After that, no trace of her was lost. It is not known whether she remained in Italy or returned to England. Although she has been almost forgotten and no one has attempted to reconstruct her human and artistic story, her works are scattered in various collections around the world and continue to circulate in many private auctions. The date of death is also uncertain, placed between 1949 and 1950.
