Mixed media on paper, applied to the table. Signed lower right. On the left the location ("London South Edwardes Square") and the date. On the back there are stamps from the Cortina Art Gallery in Milan. At this Gallery Annigoni exhibited in 1968, in an exhibition that was very successful. Reborn portraitist, defined as "the painter of queens", for the portraits of royalty and other important figures on the international political scene, Pietro Annigoni also portrayed ordinary people, of whom he tried to transpose into the work not only the external appearance but also the interiority. The theme of the self-portrait was a cornerstone of his career for Annigoni, an excellent exercise in technique in the representation of the face but also an introspective psychological research. He created several self-portraits in different periods, very different from each other, to express the different look that the artist had on himself. In the one proposed here, Annigoni depicts himself in the shadow, with poorly defined facial features, but in front of the easel, with his arm becoming one with the canvas he is painting; his figure is inscribed in an oval painted like a marble frame resting on a shelf, almost as if it were a commemorative altar. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Pietro Annigoni (1910-1988)

Born in Milan in 1910, Pietro Annigoni moved with his family to Florence in 1925, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1930 he exhibited his works for the first time in a collective exhibition and in 1932 he held his first solo exhibition. Four years later he also exhibited in Milan, obtaining numerous acclaim. Specializing in portraiture, he painted faces of important people, including Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Although he is remembered as "the painter of queens", Annigoni also painted portraits of ordinary people, works of rare intensity, united by an interest in psychological introspection. Between 1966 and 1988 he had his greatest period of fame and in these years he exhibited numerous times at the Royal Academy in London and in Italy between Florence and Milan. His production also includes important sacred subjects, which he created mainly in fresco for famous Italian basilicas. Annigoni died in Florence in 1988.
