Description

Group of six Baroque chairs in lacquered wood, Italy, third quarter of the 18th century. Decorated with golden piping, backrests and seats in Vienna straw. Lacquering and gilding resumed later.

Additional Information

Style: Barocchetto (1720-1770)

This term refers, specifically to furniture, to a part of the production carried out in Italy in the period between the Rococo era and the first phase of neoclassicism.

It is characterised by the formal and decorative structure still rigidly in adherence to the dictates dear to the Baroque period (hence the term barocchetto) and to the Louis XIV fashions and yet the new times can be seen in the adoption of smaller volumes, more elegant decorative modules, often directly inspired by French fashion, but always executed with rigorous principles of ornamental symmetry.

The tendency to assimilate formal and volumetric innovations but not to incorporate their ornamental elaboration finds a natural explanation in Italy in the fact that in this century the great aristocracy is experiencing an unstoppable political and economic decline.

If in the previous century there was a great profusion of furnishings intended to decorate recently built homes, to proudly show the power of the commissioning family, in In the 18th century, the focus was on updating the building with only the furniture strictly necessary for the new needs imposed by fashion or functional needs.

The old scenographic apparatus was maintained and the new must not contrast too much.

Neoclassical game table from Piacenza, supported by truncated pyramidal legs tightened by a collar in the upper band and equipped with bronze feet, the undertop band is shaped and is inlaid in maple with phytomorphic motifs and a couple of birds; the top also has an inlay with a flowery branch on which there is a parrot. In walnut, the interiors are in spruce. The original mechanism that allowed the legs to be stretched is blocked.

Pair of baroque walnut consoles, Lombardy, early 18th century. The front is composed of a succession of curls and wavy elements, according to a well-defined design; reserves, leafy and shell-shaped elements and small festoons with a flower in the centre, falling from the upper part of the uprights, complete the front decorative apparatus. Shaped top, crosspieces and turned rear uprights, the latter protruding laterally compared to the front uprights and embellished with a bulbous element placed at half their height. The layout and the carvings of the front present a typically Lombard layout, characterized by a strong resemblance to a group of seats of Fantonian origin, included within the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts at the Castello Sforzesco museum complex in Milan.
