Ludovico il Moro's farewell to his wife..

Mixed media (pencil, pen, brown ink and white chalk) on paper. Italian school of the early 19th century. Ludovico Maria Sforza cries at the tomb of his young wife Beatrice d'Este (1475 -1497); around him the friars of Santa Maria delle Grazie and on his left Bramante and Leonardo. On the short side of the marble canopy of the tomb there is the Sforza coat of arms, with two snakes and two eagles. Il Moro was profoundly shaken by the early death in childbirth of his very young wife Beatrice, his companion in his private but also political life, as well as his husband's, a patron of the artistic geniuses of their court, such as Leonardo da Vinci. and Bramante, authors of many pictorial and architectural works of the Visconti-Sforza court. Various versions of this episode are known, especially from the nineteenth century, from that of 1815 by Giovanni Battista Cigola at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, to that of Alessandro Reati of around 1850. The painting is presented in a carved wooden frame from the late 19th century.

Fan in a table display case. The fan has wooden slats and paper bunting with hand-retouched prints, in the reserves gallant scenes. The case is covered in paper with repeated profiles and motifs in gold, at the bottom right the manufacturer's brand "G. Viganò Milano".

Italy, XX Century

Double-top cupboard in mahogany style, Italy, 20th century. Equipped with a total of eight doors, two of which have central metal grates and damask fabric in the background, while the others are paneled and decorated with leaf carvings and rosettes. Front legs and spool crosspieces. To complete the decoration, upper and lower crosspieces echo the carving style of the doors.

Oil painting on canvas. Christ and John the Baptist are standing side by side, in the waters of the Jordan River: the Saint pours the baptismal water on the head of Jesus, while from above the Father and the Holy Spirit descend from the heavens to celebrate the dignity of the Son. In the background, two pious women assist, the same ones who will follow Jesus for all the years of his preaching, until his Passion. Applied on a wooden frame from the early 1900s, the painting is presented in a frame from the same period. It has minor tears and needs cleaning and restoration.

Rennes, 1780s

Cupboard with richly carved walnut stand, Rennes, 1880s. Rack characterized by a hat with a double arch and a pair of doors, each equipped with two panels with blown glass; the riser has undergone a modification over time, consisting in the removal of the shelves acting as plate racks to convert it into a bookcase. Lower body front with top and under-top band moved like a crossbow, the latter housing the two drawers, and pair of doors with carved tiles. Paneled sides, rounded uprights, wavy feet ending in a curl. Oak interior. On a decorative level we find fantastic animals such as phoenixes, Greeks, curls, rocaille-style motifs, phytomorphic and floral elements, rosettes and bows, all high quality carvings characterized by a calligraphic line. The piece of furniture is part of the Breton production of the Rennes area at the end of the 18th century, with a style derived from the arrival of the Parisian ornamental sculptors and the local interpretation of the "Bérain" style ornaments. Signature of the cabinetmaker and date of execution partially legible ("Faiet Par M(oi) I. Bap(tiste) Depo(uez) 178(?)"), placed in the reserve in the center of the riser. Jean Baptiste Depouez is among the best craftsmen of Rennes at the end of the century, knowing a certain number of furniture signed by him. With the exception of a piece of furniture dated 1799, we find, on all the furniture signed Depouez, the same panel decorated with a wreath of flowers, love knots and lambrequins, identifiable here on the front of the body doors. Finally, it is the terminal decoration called "cul-de-lampe", recognizable in the element repeated each time in the center of the low crosspieces, that attracts attention, because this very particular motif can be considered as a further personal signature of the cabinetmaker.
