History of antique chairs

The antique chair is by far the oldest and most functional piece of furniture ever created.
At the beginning of time, the chair was only used by nobles or church leaders, while the rest of the people had to settle for sitting on the floor.
The first time you hear about antique chairs , in reality, you are faced with the first example of a bench, built with a wooden plank arranged on two pillars and was more functional than a single chair because it could accommodate more people.

One of the very first single seats appears around 1100 and is called faldistorio , a folding and mobile chair , without a backrest, but equipped with padding.
In the modern period , antique chairs burst into all homes, thanks to mass production and its effective functionality.
We witness the production of a large quantity of antique armchairs , with the most diverse shapes, colors and materials.

Group consisting of a high chair and four chairs in carved, lacquered and partially gilded walnut, Lombardy, first quarter of the 18th century. Armrests and under armrests of the high chair moved, legs and front crossbar have the typical volutes of intertwined acanthus leaves of Fantonian origin, feet carved in a curl. Backrests and seats upholstered and covered in finely embossed leather with partially gilded decorative motifs. Small lacks in the carving; deficiencies in the gilding and lacquering. A group of similar seats are included in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts, in the museum complex of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.

Made of oak wood veneered in walnut briar, they have inlays in maple and other woods with small parts in ivory, the latter used both for the bird's eyes and in the petals of some flowers. The inlays are floral with vases on the open panels of the backrest. Wavy legs and back, claw and ball carved feet of a pair, removable seat cushions. This CITES document.
