Description : Contadini a Cavallo
Oil on canvas. On the back at the bottom right, there is a label that is only partially legible, on which the words "autonomous, manifestation, Cremonese" can be read. It refers to the "Autonomous Body for the Cremonese artistic manifestations", a body which, during the years of Fascism, participated in the establishing of the Cremona Prize, the prize for fascist painting created by Farinacci from 1939 to 1941, with the aim of promoting an artistic movement tied to fascism. In this competition the themes proposed by the Duce himself were: in 1939 "Listening to a speech by the Duce on the radio" and "States of mind created by Fascism"; in 1940 "The battle of the grain"; in 1941 "The Italian youth of the Littorio". The painting proposed here presents a rural scene: two farmers with horses in the foreground, skirting the fields where the women are intent on harvesting wheat. The subject could fall into the category proposed for the 1940 edition of the competition, since it clearly fits, both for pictorial methods and for subject, in the style of fascist painting, that glorifies work and the strength of workers. Unfortunately it is very worn, with several patches on the back and paint losses. It is presented in a contemporary frame.
