Additional Information

Artist: Giuseppe Capogrossi (1900-1972)

Giuseppe Capogrossi, Italian painter, was born in Rome on March 7, 1900. Graduated in Law, he has always dedicated himself to painting. In 1923 he attended the Free School of Nude of Felice Carena, at that time among the most accredited in Rome. Between 1927 and 1933 he made repeated stays in Paris where he elaborated a figurative and tonal painting that is linked to classical Italian sources. He exhibited for the first time in 1927 in a collective exhibition at the Pensione Dinesen in Rome. From the beginning of the 1940s he began a transformation of his pictorial research: the color lights up in the ranges of red, purple and orange, and the brushstroke comes alive. With the gradual abandonment of figuration, after a short period of neo-Cubist experiences (1947-1949), he arrives at a rigorous and personal abstract art characterized by a single sign-form which, combining itself in infinite variations, manages to construct the space of the picture, symbolic representation of an internal spatial organization. In 1950 the relationship with Carlo Cardazzo began, owner of the Il Cavallino galleries in Venice and Il Naviglio in Milan, which is defined in the stipulation of an exclusive contract which initiates the diffusion and trade of the production of Capogrossi also abroad. In 1951 he took part in the foundation of the Origine group, with Ballocco, Burri and Colla and achieved international fame by participating in the March 1951 in Paris - the only Italian - in the Véhémences Confrontées exhibition. From 1940 he held the teaching of "Drawn Figure" at the Liceo Artistico in Rome until 1966 when he was called to the chair of "Decoration" at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples until 1970. In his long artistic career he obtained numerous awards and recognitions, in particular in 1971 the Ministry of Public Education awarded him the gold medal for cultural merits. He died in Rome in 1972.
