Mixed media on cardboard, applied to canvas. Signed lower right. Giancarlo Cazzaniga, an exponent of Milanese Existential Realism, was mainly a landscape painter, but due to his passion for Jazz (he was a friend of Chet Baker) he also created some works on this theme. In particular the "Jazz man" series, dedicated to various instrumentalists of this musical genre. The work is presented in a frame.

Artist: Giancarlo Cazzaniga (1930-2013)

Giancarlo Cazzaniga was born in Monza on 20 September 1930. With his father's tenacity and encouragement, he dedicated himself to painting studies. In 1950 in Milan, he attended the Cimabue Art Academy and held his first training meetings. His friendship with the journalist and art critic Aurelio Sioli introduced him to the famous dairy of the Pirovini sisters, in via Fiori Chiari and to the artistic environment found there. The frequenting of the atmosphere of Brera begins, the participation in the cultural debate, the friendship and the acquaintance with the protagonists. The atmosphere of those years revolves around the historic venues Jamaica, Pirovini and the Titta bar, rich in longings and ideals but poor in pocket. He is the protagonist of that cultural tension, in life and art, later defined as Existential Realism. His first personal exhibition was held in Brescia in 1957, while in 1958 he was present in Milan, at the Permanente, invited to the "Young Italian Artists" exhibition. However, his period of greatest fame remained the 1960s: with two appearances at the Venice Biennale - in 1962 and 1966 - and one at the Rome Quadrennial in 1965. In addition to the landscape, which was a constant commitment of his throughout his career, music often returned to his works, in particular jazz (he was a friend of the great trumpeter Chet Baker). Giancarlo Cazzaniga died in Milan in 2013.
