Here he proposes the horseback portraits of two characters taken from the novel Marco Visconti by Tommaso Grossi, which tells of the impossible love between Bice del Balzo and Ottorino Visconti against the backdrop of fourteenth-century Lombardy, between Limonta, on Lake Como, Milan and the castle of Rosate. The painting is presented in a late 19th century gilded frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Filippo Carcano (1840-1914)

Born in Milan in 1840, Filippo Carcano enrolled at the Brera Academy at the age of 15, attending the painting course under the guidance of Francesco Hayez and then Giuseppe Bertini. He made his debut in 1862 at the Academy's annual exhibition with the painting Federico Barbarossa and Henry the Lion in Chiavenna, obtaining the Canonica prize for Lombard painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. A little later he painted The Little Flower Girl, making a decisive change to his pictorial orientations through greater attention to chromatic and luminous effects and a more faithful rendering of life. However, these paintings were judged by critics to be too realistic and similar to a photo. At the beginning of the 1980s, after finally having obtained important recognitions, such as being nominated as an honorary member of Brera (1874) and winning the Mylius prize with the painting Buon Cuore Infantile (1878), he began to have success abroad too. He dedicated himself to landscape painting, creating numerous views of the Lombard countryside and Lake Maggiore. Now famous, in 1881 at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, he presented a painting to strong social figures: The hour of rest during the works of the 1881 Exhibition. The following year he won the Prize named after Prince Umberto with Piazza San Marco in Venice. Numerous participations in national and international exhibitions followed, interspersed with daring excursions on the snowfields and glaciers of Switzerland. Filippo Carcano died in Milan in 1914.
