Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. The scene depicts the affectionate meeting between a grandfather and his grandson who, visiting with his mother, climbs into the old man's arms to hug and kiss him, generating joy in the man. This is a characteristic genre scene of a family setting, typical of the late production of the Istrian painter Cesare Dell'acqua. Specializing mainly in historical subjects, the artist dedicated his last years to scenes of domestic life, characterized by his most appreciated qualities, namely correct drawing, compositional ability and, above all, "photographic" fidelity in the reproduction of the smallest details. The work is presented in a period frame. Small patch visible on the back.

Additional Information

Artist: Cesare Dell' Acqua (1821-1905)

Cesare Dell'Acqua, born in Piran on 22 July 1821, studied at the Academy of Venice, soon beginning his activity as a painter of historical paintings, which he continued throughout his life. He then went to Paris and in 1848 to Brussels, where he settled and was accepted as an assistant in the studio of the painter Louis Gallait, very famous for his historical paintings, of whom he became a good student and continuator. Despite his complete integration into the artistic environment of the Belgian capital, D. always maintained lively contacts with Trieste, so much so that he painted two large paintings for the Orthodox church of the city. Between 1858 and 1866 he executed a series of paintings for the Miramare Castle, commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria. After 1870, Dell'Acqua's commitments for Belgian clients increased, who asked mainly for decorative works. In addition to the historical genre and decorative oil painting, Dell'Acqua had also tackled other themes and techniques from the beginning. In particular, he continued his activity as an illustrator, particularly successful in folkloristic subjects and children's fairy tales. The subjects and style of these works, which date back to the last two decades of the century, are closely related to his pictorial production of the last years, consisting mostly of genre paintings, in the wake of the Flemish tradition of domestic life scenes, characters and small events sometimes captured in their slightly grotesque aspect. He also made portraits, watercolours and some engravings. Most of his works are in Belgium. Cesare Dell'Acqua died in Brussels in 1905.
