Four Women 1986

Etching and aquatint on paper. Signed in pencil lower right; serial number 54/95 lower left. The work, created in 1986, proposes one of the most recurring themes in Renato Guttuso's production, the woman, which he always proposes in a passionate way in the tone, incisive and marked in the sign, to capture the gaze in an erotic and sensual emphasis . Inspiring muse and undisputed protagonist of many works by the artist from Bagheria was Marta Marzotto, whose features are also found in this work. They are four women and yet she is only one; they are close to each other almost touching, yet each ignores the presence of the one next to it. There is no narrative intention in Guttuso, but the women chase each other on the surface of the sheet as in a study book, notes for the great compositions on which the artist works. Therefore, as is characteristic of the studies, what interests Guttuso here is to follow the unfolding of the signs until they are recomposed in a synthesis that transforms them into a complete image. The etching delicately traces contours and internal lines that a few strokes of aquatint barely color; or play freely on the intricate masses of hair that have always been a typically and exclusively graphic element for Guttuso. The lithograph is mounted on a panel with a visible frame.

Hill Landscape with Cottage

Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. A glimpse of rolling hills characterized by the brilliance of the green color, in a wide range of shades enhanced by soft edges, surmounted by the blue sky and interrupted only by a cottage, which also incorporates the same colors of the earth and the countryside. It is the work of the young Milanese artist Amerigo Canegrati, who had great fame in the Thirties, and is considered among the representatives of the Lombard pictorial trends of the Italian twentieth century; his painting expresses deep coloristic qualities both in landscape paintings and in compositions and figures. The work is presented in a style frame.

R. Pellegrini Oil on Canvas Italy 1909

Glimpse of Mandello Lario 1909

Oil on canvas. Signature and location (Mandello) lower left. On the back additional signature, date and title in full. Riccardo Pellegrini, a Milanese painter, was a pupil of Domenico Morelli and was educated in the climate of romanticism. He was a landscape painter and genre painter, but he also created valuable still lifes, with bright colors and a precise and realistic drawing. His landscape production drew on the various places he visited and lived, in Italy and abroad, especially in Spain and France. In this landscape, Pellegrini offers a glimpse of the mountain that overlooks the town on the shores of Lake Como: a barren and bare mountain, albeit inhabited, with the hut on the top and a female figurine that fills the buckets at the stream of flowing water. between the rocks; the colors are those of the winter mists, divided almost transversely between the gray-blue of the upper part, with clouds laden with rain that dominate the peaks on the other side of the lake (which can be sensed, without being seen), and the green-brown of the land that occupies the lower half, with the branches of the bare trees stretched out to connect the two halves. The quiet of the mountains, the title of the work, clearly shines through and pervades the mind of the observer. The painting is presented in a contemporary frame.

ARARIC0175243
Orthodox Icon with Riza Tempera on Wood Greece XVIII-XIX Century

Synoxis of Saints with Mary and Christ in glory and Archangels.

Tempera on wood with metal riza, gilded in correspondence with the halos. The icon sees in the lower half a group of six saints, whose name is indicated in Greek characters, while in the upper part there are Mary and Jesus in Glory, flanked by archangels. The saints depicted are, from left to right: St. Gregory the Great, St. Basil the Great, St. John the bishop, St. Peter the apostle, St. Paul the apostle, St. Andrew the apostle, all important saints in the Orthodox commemorative liturgy. The figures are inscribed in a floral decoration. In the church of the first centuries, the synaxis (from Gr. Sýnaxis: assembly) was the meeting of the faithful for the reading of the sacred books and for the Eucharistic celebration. Sinassi therefore alludes to the presence of a group of people (angels, saints and saints, metropolitans and monks) who surround a central representation, therefore in iconographic art it corresponds to a group of saints or angels that surround Christ or the Madonna to glorify them. In the Orthodox liturgy such icons are usually exhibited and celebrated on the day following that of an important feast in which these Saints were co-protagonists. The icon has small diffuse color drops. Wooden reinforcement on the back. The riza is currently disassembled from the table, it requires a small intervention to get back into shape for reassembly.

Classical Landscape with 17th century figures

Oil painting on canvas. In a large green landscape where a river flows, a village emerges in the center; in the foreground on the right, on the path there is a group of women, dressed in colored tunics. the painting takes up the pictorial modalities of Gaspard Dughet, the Roman painter trained at the school of Poussin, who devoted himself mainly to landscape production, with a new freedom and a fresh naturalness aimed at discovering a real and magical at the same time, pagan Nature. free and wild. In Dughet's production the human figures were never dominant, absent in the early production and then introduced only at the request of the clientele, coming to adopt a particular type of figures without major changes throughout his career: elegant figures, with a loose bearing, dressed of a short, vaguely ancient tunic, usually anonymous and belonging to the people. Such traits are found in this work, even if the attribution to Dughet is uncertain, and it is thought rather to place it in his circle. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame.

Surreal Landscape 1974

Mixed technique on wood. Signed and dated lower right. Further signature and date on the back (1973, not coinciding for one year with that on the reverse). Bruno Artioli, an artist originally from Nocera Umbra, was above all a landscape painter, who interpreted both with a classic naturalism and with a geometric purity in an abstract key. In this second interpretative key, Bruno Artioli's views go beyond phenomenal reality to acquire a completely objective character, devoid of any particularism, the elements of the landscape end up being reduced to pure forms and pure colors. The work presented is part of this conception of the landscape, sparse, geometric, clean in every line as well as in the subdivision of the colors, which each maintain their own identity and occupy a well-defined space. In frame.

E. Fantuzzi Oil on Canvas Italy XX Century

Figure with flowers

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. On the back further signature and dedication with declaration of authenticity. Influenced in his Parisian years by contact with Expressionism, Fantuzzi placed a marked emphasis in his works on the expression of emotions, of moods. His figures are therefore summary, never completely defined, rather deformed into elongated forms, the faces anonymous, and placed in solitary and melancholy settings; On the other hand, color dominates in his canvases in its most marked ranges, usually the cold tones of blues, greens and purples, which create sometimes violent contrasts. Fantuzzi's main themes are the loneliness of the metropolis and the difficulty of communication in interpersonal relationships, often expressed in solitary figures like the one presented here, a woman with a bunch of flowers in her hand, on a fiery red background, devoid of other figures. The work is presented in a style frame.

The Allegory of Spring Oil on Canvas Italy XIX Century

Oil on canvas. At the bottom right there is the badly legible signature (W. King?) With the date (1870?). The painting proposes the portrait of a young and beautiful girl who sits on a rock, in a wooded landscape, covered only with her long hair and a transparent veil embellished with roses. It is these details that make us think of an allegory of Spring, the flowering season but also symbolically the season of sensual, carefree and graceful youth. The already restored painting is presented in a late 19th-early 20th century frame.

Mixed technique on paper, applied on cardboard. Italian school. The name of Londonio is proposed on the back: the delicate piece certainly recalls the subject and manner of the work of Francesco Londonio (1723-1783), the Milanese artist who specialized in the animal and pastoral genre. It can be considered a work inspired by Londonio, by an artist close to his field.

ARARPI0107509
Genre Scene At The Barbershop Central European School 18th Century

Oil on canvas. Central European School. The scene is set in the shop of a barber, who is intent on cutting a man's hair under the watchful eye of other customers and, above all, of some women with children, one of whom even observes the result of his work with glasses. Glasses were introduced in art first as a sign of distinction, and later also as a sign of scientific attention, progressively delineating the figure of the scholar, doctor and surgeon: in this painting, they actually underline the irony of the scene, and they are used as a tool for a close female examination of the spouse's haircut! The whole scene is filled with figures, painted in a crude and almost grotesque way, with very marked, almost theatrical expressions and poses, underlined as well by the bright colours. Due to these characteristics, the painting fits well into that production of genre scenes based on popular life captured in its most lively and characteristic moments, which originated in the seventeenth century in Central Europe, especially in the Netherlands, to replace naturalistic and religious painting with lighter subjects, and which in Italy found a particular expression in the "Bamboccianti School", developed in Rome by Flemish and Italian painters. The painting has been restored and relined. It is presented in an antique frame.

Lament Over The Dead Christ Oil On Canvas North Italy School 1600

Oil on canvas. North Italian School. Inserted in a late Renaissance landscape, the composition of the figures is arranged according to an ascending diagonal towards the left and more precisely culminating with the three crosses on Calvary in the distance; the body of Christ is in the middle, lying, albeit also obliquely, behind him there are three figures: St. John, Mary in the centre, and a pious woman, the only one depicted in seventeenth-century clothes- probably a portrait of a person close to the client. The piece can be placed in the Lombard-Venetian cultural production of the first half of the 16th century, more precisely in the pictorial activity that flourished between Brescia, Garda and Verona, which found its maximum expression in the mannerist ways of Giovanni Demio (1500-1570 ca). In particular, some elements are found in the piece, especially in the shapes of clothing and poses (for example of Saint John), which refer to models of Raphaelesque mold that were widely used, thanks to the mediation of engravers such as Marcantonio Raimondi (1480 -1534 ca ), who contributed to the distribution of the pieces of the masters. The painting, restored and relined, has extensive renovations. It is presented in an antique frame, that can be dated around the 17th century, repainted.

Virgin In Prayer Oil On Canvas Early '800

Oil on canvas. The face of the Virgin reminds of the style of representation of Giovanni Battista Salvi, also known as Sassoferrato (1609-1685), whose style was often revived in 18th and 19th century. There is a cartouche on the back of the painting with the inventory number (N. 193) and the name of the collector Giuseppe Bertarelli (1804-1875), merchant and philanthropist from Milan, known for his important art donations to the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The painting is in its first canvas; needs restorations for small paint losses and two small holes. It is presented in a coeval frame.
