Filippo Palizzi, originally from Vasto but artistically trained in Naples, represents, along with his brother, the first attempt of Realism in the Italian painting of 1800, in the footsteps of the Neapolitan School. He was called the "animals painter", but he also mainly represented glimpses of rustic corners and views of Naples and its surroundings. He was one of the first painters to be interested in photography and practice it, and he often used his or other's photographs as a model for his paintings. The painting is presented in a frame in style.

Additional Information

Artist: Filippo Palizzi (1818-1899)

Born in Vasto in 1818, Filippo Palizzi was an innovator of nineteenth-century Neapolitan painting. In Naples in 1837 he was in contact with the Posillipo school, which helped to make him abandon academic painting. In 1855, on a study trip, he visited Holland, Belgium and France; he returned again to Paris in 1865 and 1875. Back in Naples, from 1878 to 1880 he directed the Academy of Fine Arts, reassuming the same position again in 1891 and, from 1880, he collaborated in the organization of industrial art schools. abandoning the academic style to devote himself to the study of reality, above all of landscapes and animals, in harmony with contemporary French experiences, turning his painting towards the humblest subjects (small landscapes and small pictures of animals), referring to the tradition of Dutch animal rights from the seventeenth century, but with a more open, fully nineteenth-century naturalism.
