Description : Madonna con Bambino, San Giovanni Battista e Santa Caterina

Oil painting on canvas. Nineteenth century. The group of sacred characters is presented with all the attributes of each figure; the scene is very earthly, permeated by an atmosphere of familiarity, with a series of gestures and glances that cross and link the different figures. In the background, a large landscape, in which classical architectural structures are inserted. The work takes up the painting of Palma il Vecchio (1480-1528) in its pictorial mode, and in particular it refers to one of his works, the "Madonna and Child between S. Caterina and S. Celestino (on the left) and S. Giovanni Battista and Barbara (right) ", preserved at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. In this copy the two saints placed to the left of Mary are missing and the positions of the figures are changed, as well as the background, but their composition is the same, as is the almost identical St. John the Baptist. The painting is mounted on an English frame, suggesting a copy made by an artist of that origin. It has a small hole in the top center and drops of color.
