Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. Mino Maccari's artistic production is mainly aimed at social and political satire, expressed above all through drawing; moreover, he never positioned himself as a judge of Italian customs, but rather as an amusing and amused chronicler of the vices and weaknesses of society. In his pictorial production, although he does not deviate excessively from the themes of his drawings, he accentuates the fantastic aspect more: with rapid and decisive brushstrokes and bright, often violent colours, he characterizes almost unreal or rather caricatural figures. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Mino Maccari (1898-1989)

Born in Siena in 1898, Mino Maccari was an Italian writer, painter, publisher and journalist. From an early age, extroverted and gifted with a lively visual intelligence, he was inclined towards free drawing with charcoal, but his father, a literature professor, tried in every way to direct him towards humanistic studies. After completing his secondary education he enrolled at university. An interventionist like many young people of his time, he participated in the Great War at the age of just nineteen as a field artillery officer. After the Second World War he continued to acquire recognition, thanks to his prolific creative work, and to present personal exhibitions. In 1962 he was also entrusted with the presidency of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and managed to obtain a personal exhibition at Gallery 63 in New York. His production of drawings, watercolours, tempera etc. is endless, sometimes in collaboration with prestigious publishing houses; it is worth mentioning, just as an excellent example, the 32 black and white and color drawings with which he illustrated Il gusto di vive, a volume that collects writings by Giancarlo Fusco, edited by Natalia Aspesi and published by Laterza in 1985. He died in Rome on 16 June 1989.

Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000

The twentieth century is characterized by the prevalence of the bourgeoisie over the working class and by the discovery that life continues to be a struggle for survival and to improve its quality. Technological progress, instead of favoring this development, becomes an instrument of mechanization and drying up of man, who needs to look for a "soul supplement" and new forms to express it. Therefore, a whole series of artistic currents are born that create works expressing the interiority of man, which evoke reality from within rather than represent it, and depict it using, freely, shapes and colors. We therefore have Decadentism with Art Nouveau, Matisse and Braque's Fauvism, Picasso's Cubism, then Expressionism with Munch, Kandinskij's Abstractionism and Metaphysical painting by Carrà and De Chirico. There are numerous currents and groups of artists and intellectuals who use Art as a Manifesto of their thought, often also with a political connotation.

Artistic technique: Painting

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
